Catheter comes out tomorrow. I've sort of gotten used to it. The irritation
is much less than a week ago (callouses?). It sure will be nice to be able
to take long walks and excercise without that tube and bag bumping around,
inside and out.
Now I'm about as stressed about continence as I was about the surgery. At
least the appointment is in the morning and I'll have all day to figure out
what kind of diapers or pads I'll need. I've got some extra-heavy-duty but
I hope I'll be able to get along with lighter-duty ones. I'm planning on
going back to work Wed. if I can keep from being soaking wet for a few
hours at a time.
On a *much* more positive note, I'm proud to announce that Willy has already
woken up a couple of times, even before the catheter is out! All it took
was a little cuddling with the missus and he remembered what he was
supposed to do! I hate to brag about something that lots of us have serious
problems with, but I guess we should spread good results around with the
bad to give the newcomers some hope.

Good luck. May your incontinence be insignificant and short lasting.
And may Willy keep up the good work.
Thank you for putting a smile on my face.

hi wake - glad to hear the great news.
you ask if the stress ever stops - the answer is no. if it's not the
cancer, then it is the incontinence. if not that, then it is the
erections. if not that, it is the future psa tests. and the lists goes
on.
the great news is that we are in the same boat and at least we got each
other to fall back on.
great news about willy. hopefully, you will be bragging about using
willy at the 30 day mark. that is when my surgeon gave the go ahead.
be sure to ask him for the viagra tomorrow and start taking that right
away and night time. studies have shown that treatment right after the
RRP with 100mg viagra increases the erection success. was in 4/03 issue
of JAMA.

With regard the continence Wake, you might as well just resign yourself to
having no control at first and little control later and full control later.
Oh, and since Willy is working, don't be surprised that a the lack of
control during sex at first.

Wake, good news about Willy. I think that is a positive sign for
continence as well. The nerves that affect ED and most nerves that
affect continence are in those precious bundles we try to preserve and
with Willy functioning it seems your nerve bundles were not seriously
traumatized. It is my hypothesis that you regain continence before
erections so you ought to be fairly dry from the outset. Anyone out
there using four pads/day with a fully functional Willy?

Hey Wake....... see, told you so... each days is one hundred percent better
than the previous

well don't be.... you'll be surprised at the non leak immediately, but
expect a little disappointment when dribbles occur, expect dryness to be
reality after a week or so, then a little dribble again later and one day
you'll say, wow I haven't felt a dribble for three days now. Yes continence
comes. Oh btw take a pair of briefs (not boxers) it holds the pad more
secure. And don't buy anything unless you're sure .... I have a full pack
less three of depends and six pads available for the taking :)

aah the memories of this and the happy feeling .... mmmmm....you may have
never had to try to get a marshmallow into a piggy bank ...but you get the
idea; expect this sensation for a little while ...

Think positive. You may be continent from the get go, especially with
the positive signs you have experienced with the other. If you do join
Leakers Anonymous, I use Depends Guards for Men. I think it is 52 in a
package, costs about $16.00 at CVS. Wear them with briefs, they will not
work with boxer shorts. On a bad day I fill one up in two hours. A normal
day is one in the morning, change around noon, change that one before
driving home from work, and then one for the night (in the beginning I wore
the Depends underwear at night). You can tell when it is ready for a change
because it gets heavy and weighs down the underwear. When you walk you can
feel it hit your thighs. When that happens, get it changed fast. I have
gotten busy, did not pay attention, and I have lost count of the accidents.
Had two in one day a month ago. If it keeps up for months, I do not
recommend the rubber band approach.
Thank you.

Ah, you'll be so glad to get rid of the cath, Wake!
I wish you good success with the continence...
and hope that Willy will continue to surprise you!
Take care,

Great news, but let me respond with my usual unintended pum. Don't be
alarmed by ups and downs in this process. It is a good sign that you
are showing signs of erectile recovery, but don't expect your progress
to be uniform. Most important, don't be discouraged if it isn't.
Good luck.

Thank to everybody for all the good comments and suggestions. I'm much less
stressed this evening, and ready to return to work tomorrow.
A mostly successful report about today (after cath came out):
Most of the time I feel just like before surgery. I had some minor urgency
and control problems because of the enlarged prostate so I was used to
controlling it. I can feel the urge to go and control it with the Kegel
squeeze just like before. However, as several have mentioned, it's best to
start looking for the restroom ASAP after that.
I've had a few little leaks. I'm using Super pads (with wings!) and that's
handling it just fine. I've had to use about 3 since about 10 this am, but
they weren't completely full. Tonight I'll use the "Baby Huey" diapers just
in case.
On the erection front, I'm going to try to stay off the viagra if I can
(don't like drugs). It's more fun to chase the wife around and try for a
cheap feel - that's nature's way, isn't it? If that doesn't work I think
I'll try the pump.

Sounds good all around!
If Mr Willy decides to take a rest for a while after the catheter comes
out, don't get discouraged. Remember what you just told us here. The
mechanism is still there. You have evidence!
I remember another Mr Willy resembling nothing so much as a piece of
Teflon plumbers tape after the catheter came out. If you've ever
worked with the stuff, you'll know what I mean. It was a bit alarming,
actually. Formless and void. Fortunately, the healing process worked,
though it was slow.
