beat/fight prostate cancer. You can add your own or take away what you don't
like. I realize we are all at different points with this disease. We all
need to be moving towards better health. We may have cancer but we can still
take the steps towards optimal health. Best wishes to all.

Dave,

I'm very interested in this post.  And I, for one, am extremely appreciative
of the time and effort obviously involved.

But, just for clarification, is this regimen good for prostate health or for
fighting prostate cancer?

I can do it all except lose weight.  And, I'm not sure that I'm overweight
or just a foot too short.

Hi Steve,

Your humor is still the best and makes us all smile.

ITo answer your question it is good for both.

I am looking to kill the prostate cells. I am continually doing research on
how to kill prostate cells. Looking at studies and research. The following
things were reported to kill prostate cancer cells and/or slow the
progression of the disease.

Low fat diet, exercise, whey protien, ground flax seed, daily aspirin 80mg,
lots of green tea, grapes, red wine, onions, garlic, modified citrus pectin,
brocolli, and there are others that have killed or reduced the amount of
prostate cancer cells in studies. I know I am preaching to the choir here on
this newsgroup. I am probably overdoing these but I am eating better have
lost 20 pounds and getting in the best shape of my life

There is a ton of research out there on humor and laughter - how it boosts
the immune system.

We can be proactive against this disease in many ways.

I hope your doing well. Wishing you <0.1 for the next Decade.

Thanks Dave.  And, again thanks for doing the research that most of the rest
of us haven't the time or inclination for.  It's a tremendous help.  I'll be
writing up a whole new grocerly list for my wife.

i did mostly what has been listed for trying to prevent prostate cancer,
but the doctors explain to me,"that if a male family member has or had
prostate cancer, the likely result that prostate cancer will be passed
down to the male family members. i agree that the listed preventions are
important and should be followed.

Hi, Dave......

Like Steve, I, too, appreciate the time and effort you put into this post.
There are so many good points to keep in mind.... for those concerned about
some future encounter with PCa or those currently battling the disease.
I have a friend who has a heart condition, and he has been using guided
imagery lately... and meditation... and he says he just *feels* that it is
making a difference.  It is said the we humans only utilize 10% of our
brains... and I truly believe that thinking positively can really help in
beating an illness.

I wish you a lifetime of undetectable PSAs....

Take care!

Dave,

I believe the steps that you outlined won't hurt anyone and should
help their general health.  They may also help prevent the onset of
cancer, or even slow its growth once already started.  I have
doubts however that they will do anything curative once cancer
is already present.  And I don't believe they will prevent cancer
from occurring, just make it a little less likely.

Personally, I have always eaten a good, balanced diet, exercised,
kept my weight at the same level as it was 30 years ago, and eaten
many of the foods on your list.  And I still got cancer.  I can't even
blame heredity since my father died of a heart attack at age 87 and my older
brother still has a healthy prostate.

We just don't know what causes it or prevents it.

On the other hand, all diet and exercise aside, I'm hoping those
68.4 Grays of radiation you got will cure you.  That's strikes me as
a good, heavy dose for a man who has already had his prostate
removed.

I've read that 90% of men who have extensions beyond the
prostate capsule, but don't have metastatic disease, have
those extensions within the first 4 mm of tissue.  Your
radiation should have zapped that area and more, giving you
a decent chance.

Here is an article which is pretty much on point about weight and
prostate cancer:

Prostate cancer: another aspect of the insulin-resistance syndrome?

Barnard RJ, Aronson WJ, Tymchuk CN, Ngo TH.

jbarnard@physci.ucla.edu

Insulin resistance and compensatory hyperinsulinaemia are thought to
be the underlying factors in the metabolic or insulin-resistance
syndrome and can be controlled by diet and exercise. Hyperinsulinaemia
has been shown to have a direct effect on the live, suppressing the
production of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) and insulin-like
growth factor-binding proteins 1 and 2 (IGFBP-1, -2) while stimulating
the production of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). These factors
have been proposed to be important modulators of hormone-related
cancers, such as prostate cancer. Men adopting a low-fat diet and
daily exercise reduced their levels of serum insulin and IGF-1, while
increasing their levels of IGFBP-1 and sex hormone-binding globulin
(SHBG). Cell-culture studies with LNCaP prostate cancer cells showed
apoptosis of tumour cells and a reduction in serum-stimulated cell
growth in the post diet and exercise serum. These results suggest that
prostate cancer may be another aspect of the insulin-resistance
syndrome and that adopting a low-fat diet combined with regular
exercise may reduce the risk for prostate and other hormone-related
cancers. This needs to be tested with prospective studies.

Seems like we need to take care of our bodies to fight cancer. This
regime will also help protect our hearts and the rest of our body.

Studies like this are at best preliminary and would have to be confirmed
by other studies.  In any case, it is all a matter of probabilities.
It may be that regular exercise and a low fat diet, which I engaged in
for the past 25 years, will lower your risk of getting prostate cancer.
But other factors may increase your risk.   The biggest risk factors
are being a man and getting old, and few of us would want to avoid those.

I haven't stopped exercising, and after eating a low fat diet for so
many years, I get sick every time I indulge in fatty food.   So I will
continue these good habits and hope they protect me somewhat from heart
disease, at least for a while longer.   But even there, age and heredity
will do their damage.

We are followers of a low fat diet, but do not abstain altogether, it's
just not at the top of the food list.  I am also of the opinion that
humans can get along very well with small amounts of food intake.  Water
is another story.  Nowadays there are so many temptations to eat it is
very difficult to resist.  Discipline is paramount.

Live to eat or eat to live, that is the question.

Really good post,I believe we have to uttilize mind, body and spirit to have
whole health. The diet thing is harder as I quit smoking and also developed
GERD-
the acid reflux thing,so I can't eat a lot of the acidic foods, but am getting
weight to good space.
