Years ago this happened to my mother while she was sitting in the living
room watching tv. We made it to the hospital 30 miles away and she
recovered, she's now 87 years old.
Blood clots forming and then breaking loose and moving up to the the
lung and heart are one of the risks of any surgery, but it's a small
risk. It also can happen during extended air travel and under other
conditions. It can also happen to anyone. I'm happy you made it to
medical attention as soon as possible and yes it could have been fatal.
You're on the mend.

Sometimes it's due to inherited type of blood, my 83 year old neighbour got
diagnosed with it years ago.
He takes an aspirin a day for it as a preventative.

Blood clots in the legs, which can move to the lungs, are the one
possible serious side effect of prostate, or any abdominal, surgery.
Normally, they take all sorts of precautions to avoid them. Usually
when you come out of surgery they attach pressure stockings that pump
your legs to encourage circulation. They also get you up and walking
as soon as possible. They usually send you home with special stockings
which you are supposed to wear for a few days. And they encourage you
not to sit with your legs down for any extended period of time, and to
walk as much as possible.
Blood clots are quite rare if all these precautions are employed. If
they were in your case, but you had them anyway, you were just unlucky.
In any case, it does appear that they caught them in time, and you will
probably come out of this with just a bad memory of what happened.
Good luck with your recovery.

I was told that blood clots were a potential problem and they had pneumatic
wraps on my legs to prevent them. However, I did not have a problem

hi paul - i have something happen shortly after i got home.
it was the day after i got home from the hospital. i felt pretty good
and decided to go out to sam's. i walked from the car to the front door
which may have been about 100 ft. i made it to the greeter and started
feeling sick. i asked if i could sit down and sat there for about 15
minutes but felt worse. i decided to walked back to the car and didn't
know if i was going to make it. the wife came out to the car, i told
her what happened and she drove straight home.
i didn't feel much better that night, but didn't go to the hospital. my
pee bag had cleared up to yellow that day and it turned to a light
cherry color again and stayed like that for the next two days. but i
didn't see any clots in it.
nobody else has posted anything like what i have experienced.
you had it much worse that i did.
i don't have a clue as to what i did to cause it or even what happened.
i just know what i felt and what followed.

I was in the hospital from 12/15 and released 12/23. My first foray outside
was Christmas Day when I took cookies down to the poor schlups that had to
work. So, we're talking ten days post RRP. I had no problem getting to the
car, to the offices, back to the car and home.... but, I needed a nap when
I got there.

Walk.......walk the day you are incised, and from then on. If you stay
sedentary after surgery you will have problems as those expressed.
I am sorry for your problems and glad that you are in control now. Keep an
active physical life, and you will be amazed.
I am! I try and guaranteed it is not easy! John Loomis. wish you well,
and hope you find yourself healing.

I friend of mine went home after RP and started to feel really bad,
collapsing shortly thereafter. His wife rushed him to the hospital where
they diagnosed a blood clot that had travelled to the lung. If I remember
correctly, he may have had another emergency operation.
He did make a full recovery, but was close to death during the
emergency.
