Hormone suppression (e.g. Lupron) will do it.

They use it to stop progression of the cancer, weaken it (theoretically)
and shrink it before radiation.  Mine shrank quite a bit.

However if you haven't got cancer, just benign prostate hyperplasia,
I've never heard of it being used for that.

Cardura helps shrink the prostate, but you need a Dr. prescription. There are
some herbal remedies out there, but don't know if they are effective or just
smoke. If your prostate needs shrinking your doctor must have discovered this
during an exam. What did he say about it? If he left you wondering-I'd find
another doctor.

Hormone suppression therapy has nasty side effects.  It reduces libido,
makes sex more difficult, causes hot flashes and, if taken for a long time,
can make permanent changes in the body including osteoporosis and
a permanent reduction in testosterone.

All this is acceptable if the alternative is death from cancer.  But
it sounds a lot less attractive as a treatment for a non-life threatening
condition - especially if it's used as a long term treatment.

But - ask your doctor.  He'll know more about it (I hope) than I do.

Cardura can be helpful in reducing prostate size and increasing urine flow
in some instances. My GP prescribed Cardura along with two other drugs to
treat hypertension. When I informed my Uro of what I was taking, he felt the
dosage was not enough to have a significant effect on prostate size and
spoke with the GP. She increased the Cardura and after about a month I
noticed fewer trips to the bathroom at night. One or two as opposed to four
or more trips, now in the morning I feel like I actually slept.
Going for the second of three planned Lupron shots this week with
brachytheraphy planned for March.
If that spring planting goes like my gardening, it'll be great, nothing
grows :)
