here's a post i found on a google search of this group. my doctor
happened to prescribe this med to me today to control this issue. also
there are many sites on the internet the are devoted totally to
incontinence. it seems the levels of incontence are related to the
damage from surgery to the muscles and the nerves. damage? an
interesting thought and i'd never accuse the doctor who rid me of cancer
as doing damage. www.incontinence.org
i'll be taking 10mg. 3 times a day. it has been about 18 days and i
leak so badly that work really isn't possible right now. mybe it will
clear up on its own soon enough and i told the doctor that i didn't want
to take anything that'd delay that restoration.
does anyone else have an opinion about this drug? i seem to remember
some comments a while back about some drugs having bad side effects. the
post:

It is two years since Bill's surgery and up until this summer he was
incontinent. A doctor who is new with alternative medicine ( in his
surgeons' office and is New York Magazine's Best Doctors) found a med
that has helped women with incontinence.  Bill was started on a low does
and now takes 50 mg. twice a day. The generic name is Imipramine HCL. It
is the generic Tofranil ( which is an anti anxiety medication).  It
seems that the meds that raise the serotonin levels, also, help
incontinence.  Bill is down to 1 pad in 24 hrs. and I think that is just
for safety and security. We NEVER thought we would see the day. He has
complete control and urge. I don't know how John is doing but if not
well, please pass this information on to him or anyone who has given up.
The doctors did urodynamic testing on Bill and knew his Sphincter muscle
worked, only at times of rest.  It appears this med strengthens the
muscles and takes the bladder out of spasms. It is a miracle and we hope
long lasting.

it's also known as Tofranil, an anti depressant in larger doses. g

I hope the drug works for you as it has for Bill in the post.  Many of
us on the newsgroup are still leakers and a med that works would be
welcome.  I would not expect the drug to do anything more than ease
bladder contractions which could offer some benefit.  Others on the
group have tried similar medications with no success.  I know of no
drug that can strengthen the muscle except perhaps steroids that
athletes take and even they need extreme exercise regimens to realize
any gain.  We will all cheer on any success you have and we will all
race to the drugstore for our own prescriptions if you are successful.
I would like to see Bill go off, back on, and off the meds for a
couple of weeks at a time to see if his success really is due to the
medication.  Good luck and please keep us posted.

Greg,

I used to take imipramine for migraine.  One side effect is that
imipramine can dry you out so badly that it's hard to swallow and you
can get constip.  Another side effect (and I'm not a doctor, so I'm
speaking in layman's terms) is that it "calms down" an overactive
bladder.  That would not appear to be your problem.  Your problem
would seem to be that the pelvic floor muscles are not yet strong
enough to pinch off the urethra.  So I don't understand the principle
by which imipramine is supposed to help you.  If I were you I would
ask the doctor for an explanation of how it's supposed to help you.

Good luck with this.  After 18 days you must be really anxious for
results.

jim, maybe i haven't made it very clear. it isn't that i leak; that
would be wonderful. it's that it NEVER stops. i RUN CONSTANTLY. when i'm
sitting i don't even feel it except when the pad gets full which is
about every half hour. when i stand from a sitting position it gushes
out like a broken pipe. try with all my might to hold it and it's
impossible. i can determine just how much is going to pour out by how
much time i've stayed still. around the house i use a cup to catch it.
walking around and i can feel it drip all the time.

the term i found on the web is called ''leaky faucet'' too bad leak
doesn't describe it. it's more like 'broken pipe'. i couldn't even count
the pads i use if i try to move around all day. so it's rather
confining. is this what you all mean by leak???  i'm going to ask, call,
write via fax the doctor today as i think this is not what everyone
means by leak and that it's serious? greg

Also ask the doctor for coaching to see if you are doing the Kegel
exercises correctly.  It is much too early to say that they will not
work for you.

jim, the doctor's nurse said that the drug takes almost six weeks to
kick in. let's hope by then other natural muscles have kicked in. if the
leaking i've got is more common as some have privately emiled me, then
i'll start needing to adjust somehow for my line of construction work.
working outside though doesn't look like it'll play well being wet.
thanks for your reply ~ greg
