A year ago I was down to peeing every 2 hours, so I went to see a urologist,
he did the rectal, and decided that my prostate was enlarged. He set me up
for
a prostate biopsy and  cystoscopy, also told me there was a 50% chance of
cancer as he felt a nodule. I also had the PSA test, it was 2.24. I was 57,
now 58. The biopsy came back negative. He sat me down and suggested I have
an operation to move the prostate as it was in a position close the the
urinary tract. I opted not to have the operation. Over the last year my
frequency generally ranges from 3-6 hours and is generally slightly improved
EXCEPT when I get up to go at night. Then and only then it takes about 30
seconds to start urinating and there are a number of start and stops. 90% of
the time I get up only once in the night. However if I do have to get up
twice the second time up urination begins immediately. What is the cause of
the start and stops? Why only the first time is starting difficult? There is
never any pain.

For starters - have you consulted a second urologist ??

Burt,

Never having had a symptom of prostate cancer (which we just discussed in
another thread) and never having had any problems with prostate until
cancer, I am not up on all the symptoms of either.  However, I suspect that
if an enlarged organ can dam up a urethra, it can do it in several different
manners and at different times depending on several other conditions and
circumstances.

However, if you had this problem a year ago, did he at least have you get
another PSA test?  At 2.24, your biopsy could have missed any cancer that
might be in the prostate; especially if he did the old 6-needle biopsy.  But
if it's 3+ or 4+ now, you should have another biopsy.  You need another PSA,
especially with a postive DRE.  And you might need another urologist.

Burt,
I had symptoms that sent me to the uro who diagnosed my cancer. I was
urinating frequently, not emptying my bladder completely, etc. He first
diagnosed BPH and put me on saw palmetto, an herbal remedy that seemed to
help a bit. When my PSA came back too high, he did a biopsy and found the
tumor. I can't tell you what to do of course, but maybe another PSA might be
helpful.
Best of luck to you.

It could be that you only have an enlarged prostate with a narrowed
urethra and you might be a candidate for TURP. But your urologist should
be able to diagnose this and counsel you.

I would run for another opinion... and then maybe one more. Good luck!
