Medication for incontinence.

So last week I had my first ray of hope, a two pad day, and to boot when
I changed the pads they were not as soiled as normal.  I thought my Depends
Guards days were soon to be over.  Now I have had two of the worst days
since the offering of the catheter bag to the woody gods.  Today is another
leaky day, and I can feel it leaking, just a few drops at a time, but no
control.  When I feel like I have to go I am lucky to get a few drops.
So, I still have the ditropan and oxytrol (oxy something).  When I was
on those drugs I still leaked, so I could not see the point to piss away the
copay, so to speak, and be on a medication that did not work.  My nurse wife
told me that I should stay on the medication because it may be helping, just
not as much as I thought it would.  The question before the forum is, do I
go back on drugs... let me rephrase that.  Do I go back to the dirtropan or
the oxytrol patch?  As I recall only one or two of you out there were on
medication for the incontinence.  That was another reason I questioned being
on a drug for this condition, it certainly did not seem to fit the normal
protocol.
Thanks for your input on this.

P.S.  Buttercup the Destroyer is rubbing it in by refusing to pee since this
morning, despite being taken out several times.

Hi David S.,

Congrats on the two pad day.  I had one of those days just yesterday
though, like you, not every day.  As to the meds for incontinence, I
can't see how medications to improve bladder control by reducing
bladder contractions can help control the muscle we're all trying to
strengthen.  My doctor prescribed oxybutynin to control bladder spasms
after surgery and when I took one at home thinking a spasm was coming
on, I noticed that there was almost constant leakage even while
sitting which I had never had otherwise.  The medication not only
relaxed the bladder but apparently also the one muscle in charge of
continence - just the opposite effect of what we want.  Just my
observation with my medication.  Has your doctor explained exactly how
your meds are supposed to help?  Please share if he can provide some
insight.

Dave:
That is one of my frustrations.  No explanation.  Just a prescription
for a medication, as you observed, that is for apparently something else,
i.e., overactive bladder.  I have had several really bad leaking days this
week, but today is more or less back to normal (on target for a four pad
day).
Who knows???   Just have to wait.  I am in this five months at this
point, so I guess there is a long way to go before calling it a lost cause.
I got tired of drugs for the impotence, and with my wife injured I have
put all of that on hold.  My uro wants me to make an appointment
specifically to come in and talk about ed problems and therapies.  I may do
that down the road, but not now.
Happy Holidays to all.   Hope you can celebrate a dry New Year Dave.
   Thank you.

Sounds like you have a doctor that is (a: really interested in helping
or  (b: collecting for an office call.  I'll bet on the former.

He may have some good advice and ideas.  I would be in my doctors
office on Christmas day if I thought he could help me, even a little
bit.

Hi Bob:
My uro has a good staff.  It is the nurse, a man, who is coordinating
this, and it was the doctor's administrative assistant, a lady, that was
doing the follow up and called.  In my 90 day visit the uro gave me the
prescription for MUSE, and was more concerned that I was still incontinent.
He seems really surprised that I was still having problems there.  Right now
my head is all f__ed up to be truthful.  Last night I got on line and saw
that my checking account was overdrawn by a thousand dollars.  My first
chore today is to find out if I screwed up (probably) or if I am a victim of
identify theft.  Joy to the world....
Last night I finished a book by Michael Korda, "Man to Man" which is
about his experience with prostate cancer.  He was/is the managing editor of
Simon and Schuster in New York, and had his surgery done by Walsh.  The book
is really out of date, mid 90's when he had his surgery, but in the last
chapter he goes into some detail about the need to deal with the sexual
function right away after the surgery because of atrophy due to non-use,
etc.  That got me worried.  I think the pump will be my main way to deal
with this though.  I am tired of taking drugs, especially when they do not
work.
So, a Merry Christmas to all and to all a good morning...Ho Ho Ho.
   Thank you.

P.S.  For those interested, Buttercup the Destroyer is shunning my wife.  We
have not blamed her for any of what happened last week (my wife breaking her
ankle while walking the dog), but the dog is obviously traumatized by this
and the strange equipment in the house, wheelchair, walker, etc.  Not too
sure what to do to console her.  It will just take time I suppose.
