Gentlemen:
   I'm a 54yo guy recovering from T3C prostate cancer. I had a rp 8/20/2003
and 30 days later started Lupron. I'm starting IMRT Jan 3. I find that after
my second Lupron shot my joint aches have become pains. My hands, elbows,
shoulders and knees hurt like hell while in bed at night. The only relief I
get is when I'm moving around. When I'm sitting down for a bit getting up is
painful. I was told that any arthritis lingering around could be
exacerbated. Advil, Aleve etc only moderate. Can diet or other regimens
help? Also any advice on handling radiation would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Bob

For IMRT, get plenty of exercise, rest (naps) and cranberry juice.
I have completed 25 IMRTs at MD Anderson Cancer Center (Houston) with the
only side effect being dried up semen (no ejaculation).

Bob,

I've not had any of these side effects from Lupron.  I've been on it
for about 2 months.  Had two injections, first one 7.5 mg, second one
22.5 mg.  The only side effects I can definitely attribute to the Lupron
are loss of libido and erectile function, and lots of hot flashes.

If you're having joint pain, one thing you might try is motion exercises.
The idea is to move the joints freely, but not put a lot of stress on them.
An example is riding an exercycle against very low resistance - it moves
the hips knees and ankles but doesn't put much pressure on them.
Another example is easy swimming.  Another is Tai Chi.  Some people
do this for as much as 90 minutes a day.

I suggest this because it is something arthritic people sometimes do
with great success.  Putting lots of pressure on the joints with weight
bearing exercise can stress them.  But moving in the absence of weight
is thought to keep the joints moving freely without stressing them.

It also seems to accord with your experience - movement relieves
your pain.  Maybe you want to do more movement more often during
the day and, hopefully, it will carry over into some night time relief.

It's something to try anyway.  Hard to see how it could hurt you.

Good luck.

Arthritis is one of the side effects the FDA says patients should
be warned about.  But about the only way you'll learn is to locate
a PDR and read it yourself.
