doofy - 10 Apr 2008 02:26 GMT Just got his book in yesterday. Going to read it starting now.
He'll be in Palo Alto, CA on 4/17. Yeah, I know, I said that already, but hey, humor me, I've got cancer.

Well, gee, Safire, that's certainly a kind, helpful response, and one that's sure to encourage the guy to hang around this NG!
Just FYI, is IS possible to type a response and wait a few minutes or so before you hit the "send" button. During that time you can think a bit, and ask yourself, "Do I REALLY want to be this much of an a.shole?"

I guess Alex has been away.
This is a troll. Replies to it simply feed it, which is what it craves.

I.P. Freely - 11 Apr 2008 01:46 GMT > ask yourself, "Do I REALLY want to be this much of an a.shole?" The answer, in Safire's case, Alex, is a resounding, proven "Yes". Please don't feed the trolls.

English is not my main language. What is the meaning of "troll" in this context?
I checked the dictionary but I am not certain... is it "a monster renowned in folklore and myth"??

Personally, I think "troll" is a pronunciation derivation of "trawl". They are "trawling" just to see who they can catch in their net, and then they just try to provoke whoever responds.

Trawling is dragging a net behind a boat; trolling is dragging a lure or other bait behind a boat.

Ah, thank you.

That explains the trawlers (boats with nets hanging from the sides) that I used to see in my youth in Louisiana, and people talking about their trolling motors, which they would put on whatever boat they had.

From Wikipedia:
"Their merit lies in allowing the troller to strike quickly, before the fastidious fish suspecting something wrong, has time to eject the bait from his mouth."
Yes, it's all clear now!

> English is not my main language. What is the meaning of "troll" in > this context? A troll (internet slang) is a person who posts stuff just to stir up trouble, with no redeeming point to make. Normally it applies primarily to people who do it deliberately, but often readers can't tell ... and probably don't care after a while ... if the troll has alcohol or mental problems.

Gourd Dancer - 11 Apr 2008 04:43 GMT Alex, being an a.shole is exactly what that person wants. I have plonked him and do not egt to see what he espouses any longer unless it is contained in another message. And, I can say that not reading him has been a wonderful joy.
Take care,
Gourd Dancer

> Alex Goofy has been around for almost a month here. Goofy doesn't trust his own urologist. He has been trying to get in touch with at least two celebrity docs. He whines that they don't have time for him the day he calls. He's panicking because he is convinced that his low grade cancer is growing very fast. He believes food supplements may cure him. He believes he absolutely needs "imaging" - performed by another celebrity doc, that, unfortunately, cannot see him this afternoon. There are many great doctors in the SFO area, that could take good care of Goofy and tell him whether he needs treatment. "I have cancer" is a lame excuse for not taking charge of your own life.
