I am posting this for a friend who doesn't go on the boards (I've posted
here before). My friend had a RP a year ago and about 9 months ago was
given the injection to suppress testosterone. He doesn't know the name
of it so I am sorry for not having this information.

He just told me how angry he is because the doctor told him it would
take 6 months for his sex drive to return. He recently went to have his
testosterone level checked and it was still very low. How long does it
usually take and will it ever return? He tried Viagra, Cialis and
Levitra. Levitra gave him an erection but he is upset because he had to
really force it and has no desire when he looks at women and is getting
progressively more discouraged and despondent about ever forming a
relationship again. He is 59. Does anyone know if the drive ever returns
and if so, maybe from personal experience after this injection, how long
it took you?

Usually weeks to months, but sometimes many months to never. The older
we are, the higher the risk of non-resumption.

He may be misunderstanding some terms; not just the medication.

As I recall from your other post(s), your friend had a prostatectomy (RP) and it didn't take.  He then had radiation (RT) and hormone treatment(s) (ADT), which by the way was probably Lupron.

With the surgery and radiation, his ability to have or maintain an erection was probably stifled considerably.  My RP was in 2000.  My RT was in 2002.  The first time I was able to maintain an erection was 2003.  It is not uncommon for a man to immediately have potency and your friends potency was assaulted twice in three months.  But, it would certainly be too early to panic one year later -- if it hadn't been for ADT.

ADT doesn't only reduce his ability to have an erection, it also inhibits his libido.  Quite often he can't have sex, but then he doesn't really care.

The fact that he wants to have sex is an indication to me that the ADT is wore off and now he is dealing with the assault to his reproductive system.  It may be another year or 1½ years before he is certain of a problem.

Thanks so much for the reply, Steve. You have a really good memory
because that was the sequence of his treatment. When you say that he
wants to have sex...he doesn't on a physical level. He has no desire at
all. On an emotional level. because like most, he wants love in his
life, he wants to start dating again and hopefully meet someone but
feels that because he can't have sex, why bother. I guess he just has to
wait it out and see if the drive returns and just wants some idea
statistically when it does. The thought that it may never return is
making him very upset and t looks like there's no way to predict this.

I had Lupron injections.  After the last one (a 90 day
injection), it took about 5 months for the testosterone to begin
to come back and about 6 months to reach pre-treatment levels.
That includes three months of theoretical Lupron activity plus
another three months before full recovery, or six months total
after the last injection.

At that time, I was 58 years old.  My sex drive did return after
the testosterone was back to normal.  Since your friend's age is
similar to what mine was, I think there's a good chance that he
will start to recover very soon.  Different people are different.
It might take him less or more time, but the great majority of
men who have not been on Lupron for years and years, or who are
not too old, will recover.

He should not despair.
