I notice Dirty Dancing's Patrick Swayze has pancreatic cancer.
One of our infamous Aussie AFL frontman has just had an RRP.
The media make big deals out of this & request you to send cards and
pray for these guys.
If we do, are we saying we are exalting them or do we feel miffed
because they might miss a few shows which entertain us?
To me they are only other humans in the firing line.
Who sent me a card??

Clarence:
I agree they are no more worthy than the next guy. The way I look at
it is these celebs bring more visibility to the cause. So while I hate
to see anyone hit with cancer or illness sometimes their celebrity
brings more visibility to the disease. Losing a friend to pancreatic
cancer last year I think it's a cancer that you don't hear alot about
it.
ps.... if you'd like send me your address and I'll send you a
ecard. :) Stay well.

When I heard it on the radio this morning, I had exactly the same thought.
Who the f---- cares? He was a poor to mediocre actor at best and, so far as
I know, has never done a damned thing for anyone other than himself.
But, I could be wrong.

Assuming that Steve K is correct, nevertheless and notwithstanding, he
is a *fellow human being* who will very likely be killed rather soon by
his cancer.

Indeed.

Forget the so called importance of the who in this case and just be
glad that the pC has been given a little press. The media have no
choice but to only report the celebs, it puts a face to an otherwise
intangible and for me putting a face to pC goes a long way to helping
solve the problem. BBC World sure isn't gonna tell my story. Maybe
there's some ultra rich guy or girl that'll now give some funds for
research that was totally in love with the dude during "Dirty
Dancing". Awareness, awareness, awareness.

That's the nature of being famous. I had similar thoughts to yours.
After letting it sit for a while I also had this thought.....
Pat Swayze has more money and fame then I'll ever have in my lifetime
but just like the rest of us fate dealt him a deadly hand. And his
odds at Dx are much worse then mine were at my Dx. I won't be sending
him a card because he will get more then enough from others, but just
like I was, he is unquestionably terrified of what lays ahead for him.
My heart goes out to him and his family the same as to everyone else
who has cancer to deal with.
