Guys:
Round 3 of my assault on PCA will start Tuesday when I begin my
18mo cliinical trial. My scans were clean so I've prequalified for
this study. PSA rose again ....I think I am under a 3 mo. doubling
time so time to attack this beast. I've been selected for the chemo/
ADT blockade arm of this randomized trial.
So Monday I'll get a Rx of some steroid to help mitigate the initial
docataxel SE's. Tuesday they load me up with Lupron (or the Aventis'
equivalent) and docataxel. I'll start the Casodex Tuesday as well.
Thanks for all you commentary and support over since my diagnosis in
summer/fall of 05. Stay tuned.
Dominic

Dominic, did I read this correctly that you are on a RANDOMIZED
trial, thus you may or may not receive the real thing?

It is randomized. Arm A is just ADT, Arm B ADT & Chemo. I'm getting
the double whammy.

Almost two years ago I too was "approved" for a clinical trial, I
think is identical to yours from the SWOG group. The two arms were
ADT vs. ADT plus chemo. I do not remember what the chemo was at that
time. I went into the ADT only group. It was scheduled for 24 months
of Casodex plus Zoladex (Lupron). My qualifications were RP plus high
Gleason plus no mets plus undetectable PSA at the first 3 month post
op blood test. Your circumstance is different than mine. I stopped
taking the drugs at the ninth month. SEs were to concerning to me.
Plus what I read about the other problems associated with the taking
of ADT. A week after I notified my Onc I was stopping he notified me
that the ADT + chemo arm was halted because two people or maybe it was
three people in that arm had died of other causes that was alarming to
the study. I am not advocating you don't participate, I am only giving
you info to ask your Dr. about. I do remember at the time I was hoping
I would be in the ADT +chemo arm because I wanted at the time to
attack this with both barrels.

WSF....Long time no see. Hope you are doing well?
I mentioned heart attack risk and diabetes two other risk factors I
have in my family history etc when we discussed risks and my med onc
basically said you deal with those normally thru your GP etc but your
bigger risk is cancer. Given my doubling times etc doing nothing is
not and option and the chemo has shown to increase survival at least
in patients with metastatic disease.
All water under the bridge as I started yesterday and got randomized
into the Docetaxel and Eligard/Casodex arm. Feel a little weird not
sure if it's that or the dexamethasone (a steroid) to combat intial
Doce SE's. This trial just opened in July. I am the 5th guinea pig at
MSKCC. Hopefully I can tolerate this stuff and arrest this beast for a
while.
What's up with the Sox? Hopefully Ozzie and company will have a better
year. It's tough living with these Cubs fans here. They've almost
converted me.
Stay well.
