My husband  made a decision and will  have his prostrate ( robotics )
surgery early March .

The  person who books the surgery mentioned  about the use of Viagara prior
to surgery.

Has anyone heard about using viagara pre postrate surgery ?

Supposedly helps with better recovery and regenerate the nerves post surgery

Thanks for any input

I haven't heard about taking viagra before surgery.  It is
sometimes used soon after.  The idea, as I understand it,
is to try to help the patient get more and firmer erections
earlier on in order to reduce the possibility of atrophy
of the relevant blood vessels and other structures.  It's
a sort of "use or lose" concept.

As to whether it works, I don't know.  There was one clinical
trial that said it did.  But the trial was paid for by Pfizer,
the makers of Viagra, who might have some conflict of interest.

If you have a suspicious mind, you might look to see if the
urologist has pens, coffee cups, or other doodads in his
office that look like little gifts from Pfizer.  The big gifts
are harder to identify, though that Mercedes on the parking
lot with the little Pfizer tag hanging from the rear-view
mirror is a little suspicious.

I'm just kidding here.  Actually, the idea of using Viagra
makes some sense on the surface.  Maybe it really does help.

And so on.

I can't help with that, but with all due respect, I can help Joan with
spelling.

ProstRate is "lying face down."

The gland with which we're all concerned is the PROSTATE.

My memory might be defective (no surprise) but it seems to me that I
already posted this correction some weeks ago.

Well, it's not an uncommon error and I hope that Joan will take my
correction in the good humor it's written.

Could be the robot has a new entry point and the surgery will be performed
on her husband's prostate while he is prostate.  After all, they do the
biopsies through the backside.

Duh...that should have read while is prostrate.

Yes, there is such a protocol.  You can look at my post, "Pump and
Circumstance," or just google "penile rehab."

The idea is that maybe taking Viagra before surgery could somehow
protect the erectile nerves.  They had done some experiments w/rats
and supposedly had some success,

Anyway, what is considered state of the art "penile" rehab" is
combination therapy."  Drugs plus injections.  (Note that the evidence
for Viagra working is based on research by Dr. Mulhall, who works for
Pfizer, who makes Viagra.)   This is from a previous post:

>>>>>Here is an example of the "gold standard" in penile rehab today.  A
*top* expert in sexual medicine at Sloan Kettering, Dr.John Mulhall,
prescribed this for a new RP patient recently:

====>Re:  *Before Surgery*

Six weeks before surgery, the patient was advised to take 25 mgs. of
Viagra six nights a week, to be taken before bed (a 100 mg. pill cut
in fourths to save money) to increase blood flow to the penis prior
to
the operation.

======> *After Surgery

*Dr. Mulhall and his associate Dr. Nelson Eddie Bennett, Jr., both
made it clear that they saw no benefit in using a vacuum erection
device (VED) after RP for penile rehab because it only "circulated
old
blood" to the penis*

Good Luck,

Leah

I've heard about the  use of Viagra in small doses after surgery, but
I've never heard about using it before surgery.

One thing concerns me a bit, though.  When I  take Viagra in a dose
sufficient to help with an erection, my blood pressure usually drops
significantly.  This doesn't cause me any problems, but I wonder if it
would if one were about to have surgery.  The effect doesn't last very
long, so it would seem safe if it weren't taken just before surgery.
You might ask the surgeon about this effect.

The effect of Viagra on erections was supposedly discovered when the
drug company was testing it as a possible blood pressure medication.
They noticed that men in the trial who had been impotent started getting
erections.
