Had a RP 5/05 and haven't had sex since. Strange thing is, my lack of
libido has kept this ED rather manageable. I still love to look at women,
porn, oh yeah and my wife, and I can still orgasm with a lot of work and
imagination, but its like a scared turtle most the time and barely sticks
its nose out even when stimulated. My doctor has prescribed a penile
injection. I'm having trouble making my appointments because I dread sitting
there and having a guy!!show me how to get an erection with a needle. I want
to do it for my wife if nothing else. My question is 1. Does the libido
normally suffer with the cancer? or is it in my head. 2. Is it usually the
case that after an RP the penis actually recedes and hence a full erection
can no longer be as once was. I mean I literally have to pinch the little
fellow out to keep from peeing straight ahead. 3. The big question.
Does the needle give you a normal erection? Normal being of course, like it
use to be. Is it immediate and how long will it last. Thanks

I'm sure it's widely variable but it seems to have dulled my libido.

Seems to be pretty common. Many doctors deny it. Studies show an
average loss of 10% of length. Some lose 25% or more, others nothing.

Yes, it can produce an almost normal erection. I've been injecting
for several months and always get some result but it varies from just
OK to really hard. I don't think even the best are as good as I was
able to get before, it doesn't seem like the "root" ever gets hard
like it used to so it never really sticks UP like it used to.

I am not sure + you did not mention your age. I was 65 when I had RP
and did not lose interest even tough suffered from ED

Yes - the penis gets shorter but one can get it up sufficiently for a
penetration and enjoy good sex
3. The big question.

Yes - there is a matter of finding the proper mix.
Ideally - in my opinion - is to get it up let's say 90% and then the
rest by stimulation. It will last 3 hours - thus with the right
partner one can get two "sessions"

I don't think cancer has anything to do with it, but the surgery itself
certainly affects how you experience sex. In my case, after surgery at
age 67, my interest in women, etc. recovered within a month or so after
surgery, but it was considerably more difficult to get excited. Without
getting excited, it is hard to maintain an erection and hard to achieve
orgasm. This has continued to improve with the passage of time, but I
an not back to where I was before surgery. On the other hand, my libido
was declining a bit before surgery anyway, and I am now 74, so some of
this was just probably normal decline. The point is that I am
interested enough and get enough gratification from sex, whatever the
intensity of the experience, that it is worth the effort.
Psychology certainly plays a role. If you are worried about the
situation, you are certainly going to have problems both in terms of
maintaining an erection and in achieving orgasm.

Peter Scardino, in his book---which I suggest you read---claims that for
anatomical reasons, the penis can't actually be drawn back into the
abdomen after RP. He describes a couple of reasons why the penis may
appear to be shorter. There have been several studies which purported
to show shortening, but I am skeptical about such results since it is
hard to standardize just what you make measurements.
A man's penis size can vary very significantly depending on the
circumstances. In my case, I've experienced what you describe from time
to time, even before surgery. I think most men seldom experience it,
and when it happens after surgery, they attribute it to the surgery. In
my case, I don't really see any significant difference in penis size,
erect or not. I was impotent for 18 months following surgery during
which time I used a pump. Now I can achieve an erection with the help
of Viagra and sometimes without it.
3. The big question. Does the needle give

I don't have any experience with injections. I was considering trying
them, but it turned out not to be necessary. It is unlikely to produce
an erection just the same as before surgery, but other men indicate that
it works well enough for sex. Don't expect miracles, but be willing to
experiment to see what works.
You might try a pump as a first step. It will give you a relatively
safe way for you to "exercise" your penis, and even start to have sex
with your wife.
Thanks

Well, now that you mention it, I don't think it has gotten shorter (how can
it)? but it's always like when you just get out of a cold swimming pool.
Like George Costansa, "it shrunk" !!!! It just stays that way now.

Mike,
My RLRP was 06/07 and I'm 45 years old. I'll try to answer your
questions based on my experience.
1] I had no interest in sex for about six weeks post op. At 10 weeks
post op, I wanted it bad but no stimulation in the world got me
anywhere. I attribute the timefram to my physical healing process with
a little mental anxiety thrown in.
2] I feel my penis is shorter when it is not erect, but my wife says
she feels no difference during intercourse, so if it is shorter, it's
marginal or only when flacid.
3] What got me back in the game was a shot of Trimix. I would not call
it a normal erection, it was more like a raging hardon bordering on
painful. I actually had to get another shot to bring me down. However
ever since that day and a QW dose of Cialis, I have no issues rising
to the occasion. I really believe the Trimix jumpstarted me.

Hi, Mike. Have you had a recent PSA. As I recall, it was going up in July.
> 1. Does the libido normally suffer with the cancer?
As you described your libido, I believe you have less libido than a typical
55/56-year-old following surgery. ED is something that you should expect,
but not a libido problem.
> 2. Is it usually the case that after an RP the penis actually recedes and
> hence a full erection can no longer be as once was.
I would not say that a full erection cannot be achieved, but it is common
for it to recede. Some uros will tell you there is nothing to the rumor,
but I and many others have experienced it.
> 3. The big question. Does the needle give you a normal erection?
Yes. Or even a raging erection.

Thanks for asking, I'm scheduled for a PSA every 3 months and I am now1 mos
over due. I tend to want to leave well enough alone, no news is good news
etc etc.. I was asking about ED because if I go in for a prescription, I'll
have a test while I'm there.

Thanks for the responses and help. I think I'll try the pump first. With
Kaiser I don't have to pay for all this equipment. And a pump can't be much
worse than me flogging myself just for a reminder of how good an orgasm
felt. I like hearing the word "raging".!!! That would feel real good
again. Its' weird but I frequently have dreams of "raging" and in the
dreams I realize the waiting period is over and I'm finally returning to
normal. It's wonderful until I'm fully awake.
