Hi All - I wrote in June because my husbands doubling PSA (.20, .44, .
88) suddenly plunged to .05.  I thought it must be an error or an
anomaly and sure enough, after being re-tested this week his PSA came
back as 1.16 (from .88 in February).  He's seeing an onocologist next
week, so it will be interesting to see what he recommends. My husband
is very reluctant to undergo hormone therapy (he's 48).
Cheers,
Karen in Toronto

That's a doubling time of about 4.2 months.  That is nothing to mess around
with.  It's back and it's back with a vengence.  I know 48 is awful young to
get hit with libido altering drugs.  I was 48 when my doubling time was
clocked at a little over 6 months.

I went on Lupron.  I'm closing in on 53 and my PSAs are below the radar.  I
work full time, half of the time outside.  I play with my grandkids, helped
my son build a shed, went out sport shooting with a pump shotgun the other
day, go up and down 20 stairs multiple times daily, and pretty much maintain
a normal life; except when I go to bed.

I suspect his oncologist is going to tell him the initial dose is not really
debateable.

The good news is, after that first dose, his libido will be heightened
significantly for a few days.  Take advantage of it.

And, insist on a refund for the botched PSA test!

To a Brit, that sounds just bizarre. Healthcare....free and for all. :)

If "Slitheen" believes that the NHS is *free* (s)he is deluded.

It's charged to the ratepayers.

And judging from what I've seen, insofar as PCa tx is concerned, it is
nothing in which to take pride.

As a Canadian, I echo your comments.  Clearly many people haven't seen
SiCKO yet! As for paying for it through taxes, yes, of course, but we
don't have HMOs denying us treatment or telling us who we can see.

Oops!  I forgot.

Tax refund then.

I'm sorry to hear of the resurgence of the PSA.

Hormone therapy is a pain in the butt, but it's bearable.
As I understand it, all the indications seem to be that it
should be used as soon as possible after a recurrence.
Waiting doesn't do any good.  I suggest that he get
the first treatment when he's in the office next week.

Now I'll tell you something surprising.  Sex is not impossible
on hormone therapy.  I was on for about six months (a
four month treatment plus a couple more before the
testosterone came back).  I completely lost interest in
sex.  I looked at my lovely wife and still loved her as
much as ever, but couldn't remember what I was supposed
to do about it.

However we had sex anyway.  Not as often as before, but
still with some regularity.  I would start out just going through
the motions.  Then, ten minutes or so into it, things would
start to happen.  As she became aroused I found, to my
surprise and delight, that I did too.  And then, as I.B. Singer
once said, a miracle would happen. :)

I think we're getting nearer to some new and more effective
drugs for recurrent prostate cancer.  There's a chance that
if your husband hangs in there with HT, he can live a surprisingly
normal, and a surprisingly long life.  It's worth trying.

Best of luck to both of you.
