I been taking flax oil for a year to help fight prostate cancer as per
Joanana Budwigs book.My psa is on a fast rise again and now I find this.Any
thoughts? Q. Is there any research linking flaxseed oil to cancer?

A. Research from Charles Myers, MD, at the University of Virginia Medical
School in Charlottesville showed that flaxseed oil causes a 300% increase
in
the growth of prostate cancer cells. Dr Myers said, 'It is the most
powerful
stimulus we know of for prostate cancer cells.' This information appeared
in an
article in the February 2000 issue of his Newsletter, Prostate Forum

I wrote him personally and was sent the following references.

P.K. Pandalai, et al. "The effects of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids on in
vitro prostate cancer growth" Anticancer Res 16: 815-820, 1996

E Giovannucci, et al. " A Prospective study of dietary fat and risk of
prostate
cancer" Journal National Cancer Institute" 85: 1571-1579, 1993.

P Gann, et al "Prospective study of plasma fatty acids and risk of prostate
cancer" Journal National Cancer institute" 86: 281-286, 1994

S.O Anderson et al, "Energy, nutrient intake, and prostate cancer risk: a
population-based case-control study in Sweden" International Journal of
Cancer
68: 716-722, 1996

P.A Godley, et al "Biomarkers of essential fatty acid consumption and risk
of
prostate cancer carcinoma" Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers and Prevention.
5:889-895, 1996

S Harvei, et al. "Prediagnostic level of fatty acids in serum
phospholipids:
omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids and the risk of prostate cancer."
International Journal of Cancer. 71: 554-551, 1997

He says that while there is no benefit shown to flax oil, these studies do
show
a negative effect. He also states that the whole flaxseeds may offer some
benefit.

I read that you need to who flax seed to do the job. Thus buy
organically grown flax seeds and put them in the food processor
to grind them up (the human body will pass the whole seeds).
Try that. BTW, I have prostate cancer and have had surgery,
chemo and radiation, in that order.

Google flax in s.m.d.c., where Matti Narkia has cited several studies
condemning flax as promoting PC.

Once again I/you/we can cite articles pro or con. Who do YOU want to
believe today? This sucks.  You have taken flax oil based on literature
you found a year ago. On 6/3/07 and 6/4/07 there are posts telling of
the possible benefit of flaxseed oil in slowing the growth rate of PC,
and an article in reuters is referenced in the 6/4 posting.  Now you
have found articles and documentation stating the contrary, and I.P.
references more articles also condemning flax.  Duhhhh.  Would the real
experts please come forward?  If we can find 10 pros and 12 cons, does
that mean the cons are right, and they win??  I don't pretend to have
the answer, but I sure would like to know myself, for all of us. I just
recently started taking flaxseed oil capsules. I even more recently (15
minutes ago) stopped taking them, my cancer is growing way too fast all
by itself without an "educated" decision of mine helping it to grow even
faster.

A week after we both are in the ground, they will determine that some
simple thing we all consume is the real culprit causing PC growth, and
then the next week they'll find some other simple, cheap, wonderful
tasting stuff with fantastic side effects which will stop PC in its
tracks.

Seems to be happening a lot lately.  Things that were bad for you are now
good (based on the latest study) and vice-versa.  Makes me think of the old
Woody Allen movie, Sleeper, where Woodie wakes up hundreds of years from now
and finds out that smoking is good for your health.

If you're tracking to doers and don'ters regarding Flaxseed Oil here,
I don't because of the research I did and determined that it should be
avoided. Nor do I take Soy. And while we're on the subject, I've also
NOT made the effort to increase the Beta-Carotene in my diet. I have
increased the Vitamin D, do take a Turmeric supplement, and have 5 or
6 Brazil Nuts every day for the Selenium. Oh yeah, and I make sure I
have my Pomegranate Concentrate along with my Orange Juice every day.
Now if y'all will allow me to interject a little religion only because
of the association to what I'm doing to live longer. I'm Jewish. The
Jewish religion has this thing called Mitzvot, meaning "commandment".
There are 613 of them listed. Some of them are dos and some are
dont's. You're supposed to follow them all. No one in their right mind
can do or don't all of them and I believe that its the intent of
whoever wrote them that no one can do or don't all of them. If you do
or don't just one, then you are a little more of a nice guy to your
neighbor than if you do none. To me that's what being a believer of
any religion should be. The same goes for what we determine for
ourselves as prostate survivors. Do do your research and do or don't
follow the advice of whatever you read or hear based on your
situation.

Do not take just the oil...you want the whole flax seed including the
sed casing. Put the seeds into a blender/grinder by themselves and
chop up the seeds as the humam body cannot break down the seeds.
I am told taking flax seed this way is good for fighting cancers but
I am not a doctor etc

I have heard no flax seed oil also...what I do now is raw flax seeds
themselves and grind them up and then eat them...I have heard
that is okay. (BTW, I am battling prostate cancer and so far winning
but what a battle it was).
