Vitamin Question

Five years ago I had Bells Palsy. After inital doses of Famvir and
Prednisone kept it at bay, I used accupuncture combined with
Methylcoblamin-B12 sublingual to get my face back, as I like to say.

The Methylcoblamin-B12 sublingual is supposed to enhance nerve
regeneration, which in the case of  Bells is the 7th cranial. I'm
wondering if anyone has resorted to vitamins to assist with the
regeneration of the nerve bundles associated with a prostatectomy? If
so, what vitamins have people had success with? Thanks.

Paul,

I did a search of b-12 and nerve regneration in pubmed.  There
have been a number of studies done on rats and mice but I could
only find four that tried it in humans.  The only one that had an
abstract talked about experimental injections of methylcobalamin.

I'm not a scientist and am very much an amateur when it comes to
molecular biology.  So take what I say with big helpings of salt.

I speculate that this drug would not have much effect when taken
orally.  There are two reasons for that.  One is that very high
doses might be needed (one study of rats showed no benefit from
low doses) and such high doses might only be achieved by
injecting it into the area of interest.  The other is that
putting high doses in the body as a whole might have deleterious
effects on areas other than the ones we want to regenerate.

In any case, this sort of treatment is very, very experimental.
I don't know if anyone yet has any knowledge of what kinds of
nerves might benefit from the drug, or what the dose should be,
or what kind of damage might be regenerated, or what amount of
regeneration might occur, or how much, if any, function is likely
to be recovered.

But, as I say, I'm a rank amateur in all of this.

Alan,

I've read a lot of that as well and I'm certainly not about throwing
money away on vitamins. That said, it's the Methylcobalamin varietal
that supposedly can be absorbed by the body even in the sublingual
form. I agree that you cannot isolate where you want it to work and
that is always a concern. When I had the Bells, I just didn't care
because quite simply it's pretty bad having half a face that's frozen.

Vit B12 is safe even in massive doses, as any excess goes down the
drain. I didn't know about B12 when my Bell's struck, but it disappeared
within a few weeks. The doc said it wasn't associated with my recent
inner ear removal and trauma to the involved facial nerves, but I doubt
that; too strong a coincidence.

I'd say you were lucky. After a few weeks, mine was not getting any
worse but not any better and that prednisone really sucked regarding
my daily outlook.

Since I did not want to not be able to blink my eye forever, I went
unconventional with the accupuncture and Methyl-B12. I recovered
almost completely save for a dry eye now and again (tear ducts get
hosed in the deal).

In fact the stricken side of my face now looks younger than the
unaffected side because it literally wiped away any lines I did have
(a botox killer!).
