I am a 41 yr.old single male I was diagnosed w/prostate cancer and I
had the walnut sized prosate removed.I was checked 2 years ago
negative and then recently in Ja. my 54 yr.old brother announced he
had prostate cancer and was having it removed in Danville,Pa.Geisnger
by way of a Da Vinci robot.Everything so far
very good.I had mine done in May 2007 Wynnewood,Pa.same Da Vinci
robotic and I am still recouperating Dr. said surgery went well and
they sent it out to lab and looked good(prostate). If anyone else has
had the surgery done by robotic I am wondering if and when an erection
occured I know all cases are different and also if there is any sort
of ejaculation my urologist informed me I would be not ejaculatng or
shooting blanks.I understand there is the miracle pills
Viag,Cial, levitra also shots, and pumps.Last if there is one that works
the best out of pills, pumps, shots??.Each person is differen I
understand.Thanx,Chip

Hello, Chip:
I am truly sorry to hear about your PCa and RLRP. 41 is just too darned
young to be going through this -- but, what can we do but play the hand
we're dealt, right? So, your brother got it; they retested you and found
you had it, too? That's too bad. Does it run in your family? In any
case, I hope you and your brother are both okay.
Among the many things that make the incontinence/impotence side effects
different for each man is the amount of damage to the erectile nerves. Do
you know if the surgeon was able to spare one or both nerves? Even if
spared, the nerves are often bumped and bruised during the surgery, and
will need to heal. My surgeon told me the healing rate is about 1mm/week.
So, if two inches of nerve were traumatized, it could be a year before full
recovery.
As far as ejaculate ... there's no prostate left to produce semen, so you
should not expect any. In some cases, the muscle contractions accompanying
the orgasm will push urine out -- it feels sort of like an ejaculation, but
not as intense.
You will probably still have orgasms, though -- even if you cannot obtain an
erection. My wife and I have managed to have a satisfying sex life, though
I am only just now beginning to get Vitamin-V-assisted erections at 7
months post-op.

Hello Charlie,Thanx for responding I am really fresh out of surgery I
had it May 22,and I really am thankful for him finding it and I am not
real bitter atleast not yet!!I had my mom have a breast removal that
went good for a long time until she acqired lymphademia? and I lost
her in Feb and then April I was diagnosed so it hasbeen a hell of a
year. But yes my brother was down visiting from Bloomsburg when he
sprung the news to myself and my mom I was shocked and thinking if
anything happens to my mom and then my brother I will flip out. I go
have the in office exam Dr.felt something, got PSA high 5's,and then
biopsy pos.all the ducks were in a row.But I am just anxious I want to
know if this will fix itself and the Dr.did start me on Cialis and
that is to build it up and strengthen I guess.I was wondering if you
jump the gun and start trying to find out by way of masterbation or
sex can it prevent the healing process??The nerves we suposed to
bepreserved and I guess there is no way to know how well or how many
are damaged I assume that the DVinci machine when operated properly
can help prevent more damage I don't know if the Dr.by seeing during
the op can say well I did save alot or if he even knows. He did say
you are only 3 weeks out of surgery wait a month and I also go back
for follow up PSA work.I will keep you posted thanx for the info and
take care,Chip

It did not in my case -- but do not do anything you're not comfortable with,
of course, and talk it over with your doctor.

Chip,
First, let me welcome you to the club that no one wants to join.
Second, let me tell you that you have found the exact right spot to find out
all you ever wanted to know about post operative impotence and incontinence.
However, it might just be a tad premature. You can start a low dose of
Viagra now, just to get things working, but I would give it at least six
months before pushing the panic button. Mine took 2½ years!
Good luck and, please, keep in touch.

Hello and thank you fo the welcome,I also want to say I was told to
take cialis just as you said to get things stronger or pumping. The
Dr.prescribed it and I sort of am impatient so when I spoke to him the
other day he said you are post op you are going to have to wait
atleast a month.Alot of people or atleast my brother who had it done
made it out to be alot less serious(prostate disease) than I could
have I mean he could have done that to keep me calm but I guess if it
is the one prostate is slow so I have to deal w/it.Thanx again for
your support.Chip

Chip,
I just had mine done on the 12th, I'm comparably 45 years old. Right
now a fork lift couldn't do the job for me, and my nerves were spared.
I will turn to probably the little blue diamond when the time comes.
Sorry to hear you have had to go through this, but what can guys our
age do, sit back and say woe is me or agressively go after the demon.
My Dad is end stage and taking chemo because he was diagnosed late in
the game so regardless of what I face, I feel I made the right
decision.
Good luck to you!
