Had IMRT and Palladium Seeding approximately a year ago. For past 6
months have had liquid type stools in the morning, about 70 % of the
time. Is this a common side effect ???
Has anyone found any solutions ???
TIA

RT can have a wide variety of bowel effects, short and/or long term.
Metamucil tends to moderate both hard and liquid stool to a more
moderate consistency. I'd try that to see it it "soaks up" some of the
excess water.

I didn't have this problem. I have read that there can be
bowel side effects, one of which is said to be bowel
incontinence.
In my totally non-expert, uninformed view, I imagine that
radiation affects only the very lowest part of the gastro-
intestinal tract, namely the rectum. I also imagine loose
bowels to be coming from higher up, in the intestines
themselves. So I wouldn't think you should automatically
assume it's a radiation effect. It might be a good idea
to call your doctors about this. You might start with the
radiation oncologist and, if he thinks this couldn't be a
radiation effect, then your general practitioner.

I've experienced 24/7 gas since the seeding end of December. Gas-X has had
little effect. I took stool softeners for about 2 months because I was
straining to go. And out popped my first ever "roid". I see my oncologist
next month. Just returned from a 1100 mile round trip in the car over 7
days, and noticed that slight burning sensation in the rectum that I
experienced for the first 1 1/2 months following seeding.

I had surgery, which didn't drop the PSA numbers sufficiently, then Lupron,
which helped, but didn't keep the PSA number down very long, then finally
radiation.
Radiation must have done considerable damage to the intestinal tract because
I experienced bloody stools shortly thereafter. That necessitated four
visits to a doctor for sigmoidoscopies and colonoscopies. First, to examine
and "take a look" to see what needed to be repaired, then three follow-up
visits for argon laser cauterization. Now, after some two or three years
things are pretty normal again, and my PSA has been so low (last time 0.04)
as to be negligible. I believe most individuals have more positive
experiences than I did, but I was over 70 when everything was started.

I had EBRT radiation last summer (June/July) after RRP in Dec 05. The only
prob i had from my radiation treatments was loose bowels which i treated
for up to 8 months with imodium. My sigmoidscopy showed no radiation burn
(proctitus) from the rads. Even almost a year out now I still experience
loose stool although only occasionally do I need the imodium. Last meeting
I had with the rad onc in March, he suggested a diet change back to what I
was used to. I had avoided as much dietary fiber as possible during the
treatments and he suggested adding more fiber back into my diet. It also
might do my high cholesterol and blood pressure some good, he said. I still
have problems though. The imodium worked great for me but my stools aren't
what they used to be.

er, ah, this too will pass.
I had something like that. It lasted about a year and is fading.
I'm pretty much back to being, ah, regular.
-kh try altering your diet. Raw carrots seemed to help me.
