Howdy, I have posted a couple of times previously and may have
mentioned once that I try to drink six to eight ounces of pomegranite
juice daily. I have advanced prostate cancer that seems to be in check
for the past year. (I have p.c. nodules in my lungs...but none in bone,
or soft tissues of the pelvis.) I am on Eligard injections. My psa is
less than 0.1 and the nodules are no longer detectable on x-ray. I am
almost 81 years of age. I took external beam radiation two and a half
years ago (preceded by a Lupron shot).
I read about the test that was make at UCLA which indicated the juice
might slow the doubling time of the p.s.a.
I thought...."what the heck...the juice tastes good in my orange juice
and iced tea---a little expensive, why not try it.?"
Well, that has been going on for about six months....maybe only the
"Shadow Knows" whether it helps, or not.
Thanks for your reaction.

Hi Ralph, I also consume the stuff but consider it very very cheap if it
does any good at all. I drink some of the concentrate mixed with the
diluted stuff daily plus take some number of capsules daily. Again,
very cheap if it does any good at all. I'll have to try it in iced tea.
It goes good with popcorn too. Good luck to you.

Ralph,
I don't drink pomegranate juice, but do sometimes take the
pomegranate extract pills. I also drink a fair amount of
tomato juice for the lycopene, which is also said to slow
the growth of prostate cancer. Lycopene too is available
in pill form.
I have my doubts about whether these things do any good
but, like you and Bob C., I figure they're cheap and don't do
any harm, and I like the taste of tomato juice (haven't tried
pomegranate.)
My PSA is currently stable at .2, which is probably due
to the radiation treatment I had. I'm not currently taking
hormone therapy.
Good luck with your therapy. I think you're doing the right
thing by taking supplements. Also try to get some regular
exercise if you can because the hormone therapy will take
a bite out of your energy and may also lead to weight gain.

Yes, in the UK the most popular brand 'pomegreat' is a blended
concoction containing 37% pom. concentrate. Is the US stuff pure?
Not too pricey (£1.40/ltr) it's refreshingly watery, maybe a little
too sugary but I've come to like the taste. There's a 'fresh' variant
-also 37% - 4-day shelf life with a harsher flavour yet double the
price.
doofus.jones - 15 May 2007 07:47 GMT
I'm currently drinking pomegranate juice like it's going out of style.
I am having a PSA beginning August after 3 months guzzling - will let
you know!

I drink 1 litre Pom juice "Pomegreat with Raspberry" every 3 days, + at
least a pint of tomato juice every day. I enhance the tomato juice with
Lemon or Lime juice, a head of juiced celery and some really fiery chillies
juiced too. Apart from anything else, it fills me up and it's delishusss!
(So I don't eat as much)

Hughie, is the tomato juice the Kearnley brand? I seem to remember
you posted up a cordon bleu recipe (tin of puree + water?) I like
tomato also but am a bit concerned about high salt content in the
supermarket brands. Where are we with PCa and salt - is it good, bad
or indifferent.
Passata - is that watered down puree?

Not sure, but I don't add salt to anything now. (Water retension reasons)

Yes!

I do drink pomegranate juice mixed with myrtle: it is sold like this in
Italy but the bottle of one liter is there and lasts few days: no way to
ascertain if it has done any good to me so far

We drink a lot of cranberry juice with Splenda in our house.
It is good for the kidneys, bladder and UT.
Hubby just got another Hormone shot, this
is his 2nd one for PC. He still takes Flomax daily.

Drinking pomegranate juice seems to be an acquired taste? We have been
sipping away, but haven't quite gotten to that point yet.
We are finding the discussions of foods here fascinating. Having been
supplement, vitamin, and mineral takers for some time, we are trying lots of
new recipes.
Thanks for these discussions.

I'm not holding out much hope for pom-juice but I do drink some a
couple times a week or there's pomegranate ice cream.
It can't hurt and a splash in green tea is nice too.
I've been hitting the fresh tomatoes daily.
Like you, I got soft tissue mets. The docs say that's unusual. I'll
be meeting with the local medical oncologist wizard today, that's
after the CAT-scan and just before the, -gulp- say goodbye to libido,
erections, and orgasms, -darn-, Lupron shot.
-kh Not that the 5 inch Mr. Pokie ever did that much.

KH - YOU are a f.cking HOOT!
I love your humour man. You cheer up many a rainy day!
Thankyou MOST sincerely!
Luvya!
Hughie.
PS - You very soon get over the lack of erections, but the thing I really
miss, is waking up with one to cuddle, something I did most days since I was
maybe - what - 13?
Oh well!

Surprisingly, processed tomatoes are said to have much more
lycopene than fresh. Specifically, tomato juice and tomato sauce
are said to be good sources.

Also surprisingly, Lupron apparently does NOT prevent you
from having erections or orgasms. It just suppresses your
libido. I was able to have satisfactory sex while under Lupron,
I just had to force myself to get started.

Live it up, guys!!!! But only after a brisk walk or 10 minutes of
weights. The Haagen-Dazs pomegranate ice cream bar is good.

I'll look into that but I like tomatoes.

I'll work on that. I had IMRT and Pd seeds about 3 years ago and
while I have 80% good-enough erections without Vitamin-V, Mr. Pokie
stands better with a little chemical boost.
Thanks!
-kh good thing I didn't toss out the pills.

I don't get serious about trying to drink lots of it. I buy a
botttle occasionally.
To answer a question asked by one person. In the US we can get
pomegranate juice in pure form, which is pretty expensive, or mixed
with apple juice, which is less expensive. As one might guess, the
apple/pomegranate combination is sweeter. Pure pomegranate is pretty
tart, in my opinion. It may also be available mixed with other
juices, but I don't recall seeing it.

If you decide to start drinking a lot of pomegranate juice daily, take a
close look at the ingredients label. It's fairly high in natural sugars /
calories. If you are concerned about adding extra weight, on top of the
other issues we are dealing with here, it may make sense to include
pomegranate extract instead of some or all of your intake of juice.

I am now getting pomegranate from three different sources:
HOME MADE JUICE FROM FRESH FRUIT: I find now on sale in some local
shops fresh imported pomegranates. This is totally out of season in
Portugal (you get locally produced pomegranates only from the end of
October to early January). They are not cheap though. Some 6 per kg.
The fresh pomegranates come from India! One of the benefits of
globalization, I guess!
CONCENTRATE: I found recently Californian pomegranate juice
concentrate on sale through the Internet with shipment within EU
(therefore no import duties). See:
http://hwize.com/pomegranate/pomegranate.html?poissim
If you buy three 500 ml bottles you get one "free", with an average
cost per bottle of 23,98 including shipment. The cheapest I could
find but... not cheap! Taste is OK but quite sweet.
EXTRACT CAPSULES: imported ex USA. Probably the cheapest approach (4x
60 capsules for $17.98 + shipment + some 50% import duties). See:
http://www.puritan.com/pages/file.asp?xs=43D399D9650D426887392595280BBE90&PID=&C
ID=&CPID=8020
I just wonder if the extract maintains the benefits (if they are there
in the first place...). Therefore, I tend to use +/- simultaneously
the three different sources of pomegranate...

I used to drink POM but the cost was huge. Now I have found
Pomegranate Concentrate is a lot cheaper. About a tablespoon with OJ
every morning.

Hi Ralph,
I've drunk pomegranite juice for about 2 years now & just this past
winter started on the extract capsules. Even though it's certainly
more expensive than grape juice, I still consider it cheap insurance
if it might be able help even a little . . .

I drink 8 ox pomegranate juice each day. For the last 6 months, I
have been preparing the juice from concentrate that I buy from
Brownwood Acres Foods, Inc. I mix one (1) ounce of the concentrate
with 7 ounces of water or juice (white cranberry is currently my
favorite).
Here is some information about this concentrate:
website address of supplier:
http://www.brownwoodacres.com/pomegranate.htm
The concentrate is cold filled and requires refrigeration. It will
last 6 months if refrigerated and over a year if stored in the
freezer. The supplier argues that its product is superior to shelf
stable concentrates because they " have been re-heated in order to
create a vacuum seal and may not have the same antioxidant capacity
since heat destroys some of the active enzymes."
This concentrate is very competitively priced: $19.95 per quart
(64 oz... sufficient to make 32 eight-oz glasses of juice).
