This was in the Toronto Star this morning.  And he freely shares how he
is doing with the public.  I don't remember him myself, but do know some
of his confreres.  The link to the whole article and pictures is.....

They are bound by blood, defined by hockey and mirrored in each other's
voice and looks.

They even share a name.

John Ferguson.

John Ferguson Sr. was a beloved, brawling Montreal Canadiens forward,
his name etched on the Stanley Cup five times.

John Ferguson Jr. is the oft-beleaguered, number-crunching general
manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, a team with names last etched on the
Cup 40 years ago.

When an aggressive form of prostate cancer burrowed into the father's
bones in 2006, it was only natural the son would help steady his father
through the knee-buckling load of drugs, radiation and exhaustion the
disease inflicts on anxious families. Another round of chemotherapy
began yesterday in Toronto as père and fils brace themselves for the
next difficult stage in the cancer fight.

In Nov 2006 (a year after prostate surgery), the 68-year-old's PSA
results were abnormally elevated, with a subsequent bone scan showing a
frightening development. The cancer had spread to his shoulder, knee,
pelvis and spine.

Is there some way I could follow on this - I mean to track his progress?
thanks.

I doubt it, Hughie.  He lives in a small town west of Toronto but stayed
with his son here while getting treatment.

I was amazed at how *open* he was about it and if I see anything, I will
let you know.  Being a Scot, you know how common the name "Ferguson" is.
(VBG)  In fact, I use it as the English version of my *foreign* name
quite often!!

All the best and I will take a hunt around to see if there is any more
info.

Cheers....Heather (Toronto, Ontario)

Here are some more. (I think they might be older.)  I'm glad you
posted this because it's such a good human-interest story.  I saw a
picture of pere et fils together, it speaks volumes.

John Ferguson Sr., the father of the Leafs GM and one of the toughest
hombres in NHL history, said his cancer treatments seem to be going
well. His next treatment is Friday at Princess Margaret Hospital.

"There's no pain in my body anymore," he said. "I feel good."

Ferguson Sr. attended the Leafs-Habs game at the Air Canada Centre
Saturday and was at the AHL all-star lunche on yesterday afternoon.

TORONTO (CP) - John Ferguson was always ready to drop the gloves if
need be during his days as a scrappy NHL forward and he needs that
fighting spirit more than ever now that he's battling cancer.

It'll come in handy. "Yeah, right about now," he said Monday. His next
treatment is Friday at Princess Margaret Hospital. "I had a body scan
last Friday and, hopefully, it's clearing up," he said on his way into
the AHL all-star game luncheon. "They'll let me know this week how
it's going.

"Hopefully, it's good."

He lives near Windsor, Ont., and is staying with his son John Ferguson
Jr., the GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs, while undergoing treatments.

"There's no pain in my body anymore," he said. "I feel good."

He was at Air Canada Centre for the Montreal-Toronto NHL game last
Saturday.

"That was the first game I've been to for a while," he said. "But I
watch three or four a night (on television).

"I haven't lost a beat."

He's a consultant to the San Jose Sharks.

Ferguson originally was treated for prostate cancer. The disease then
spread.

"That was a shocker," he said.

He's been advised to avoid stressful situations that might make him
weak, and the luncheon wasn't a risk. He was looking forward to guest
speaker Don Cherry's humorous tales as he headed for his table.

Thanks Leah.....I hoped people would see the picture of father and
son......spitting images as well.  I saw those articles and yes, they
are a bit older.  Apparently he had an RP about 2 years ago and from
what I read, it took some of his Montreal buddies to kick his butt and
get some follow up testing because he looked awful to them.......they
knew him well, it seems.  I hope he does OK....heck he is as young as I
am, grin!!
