Activity isn't the number of subscribers, it's the number of postings.
1000 subscribers posting a total of 100 messages per month is
lower activity than 100 subscribers posting a total of 500 messages
per month.
I wonder how they count "subscribers"? Is it anyone who has posted
in the last N days? I bet it's the number of people who have subscribed
through Google's newsgroup features - which doesn't count anyone
using a regular news server and news reader. If so, it's not an
accurate number.

Anyone who uses newsgroups seriously would be better off getting a
news reader program like Agent of Free Agent
http://www.forteinc.com/agent/index.php
Configure it to your ISP news server's address.

I still find that this network has about the best lay out and brings all
groups together under one umbrella. The page displayed is in my favorites.
If you click on Home you will get a listing of all other groups.

I use Netscape 4.8 it's free and I can right mouse click and make a whole
thread disappear, which is handy on some newsgroups, where there's 400 or
more oftopics daily.
What I see is the topic, the poster, hte email address, the newsgroup(s)
it's posted to, then the message. (when I click) and the number of lines
(length), so I can skip an adiot on another newsgroup who posts very long
posts.
Google users don't realize that we (people using newsreaders) don't have
ads beside the posts. :)

What am I missing by just using my OEM PC or Mac mail programs (OK,
security) or Mozilla's Thunderbird? They display whatever I want them to
display (I choose topic, sender, and date, organized in threads). What
else do the other programs provide that's of any use, and how can they
organize stuff better? Clue me in.

I was comparing using an ISP news server and a newsreader vs. getting
usenet news at google.com with a web browser.
Mail is not the issue. We are speaking of news readers, not mail
programs.
Check out the Agent site I posted so you can see features of Agent.
There are too many for me to go through, but Agent is generally
accepted as the best news reader. It can also do email if you wish,
but there are better stand alone email programs. I think the best is
Eudora.

1. I, too, am addressing newsreaders, not mail. Just like Agent, the
programs I mentioned do both mail and newsgroups.
2. I checked out the Agent website. I don't see anything in its features
that the three programs I listed don't have (that I care about). Heck,
the three I listed will do *far* more than I have any interest in, and
they're *free*. Agent strikes me as using a $29 hammer to drive a
thumbtack into cork.

Free Agent is just that...free. It has fewer features than big
brother, Agent.
