After declining surgery when aged 71 and not being as eminently suitable
for Brachy Therapy, as my Uro. first thought, when a small congenital cyst
was detected on my prostate during internal ultra-sound, I had conformal
Radio Therapy towards the end of 2001. My PSA was 28 (apparently brought
down from 34 by Flowmax during the previous 3 months) and Gleeson scale 3.
Since then, until May last year, my PSA has been fluctuating between 1.3 and
1.8 but 2 months ago it had risen to 2.8 and now it is 3.1. In case the
cancer has come back I am taking a keen interest in options for applicable
further treatment and appreciate that Cryo and HIFU may be two of them but
have yet to find out if Robotic Prostatectomy is. My Uro. has intimated
that if the upward trend continues he would start with Hormone Therapy and a
biopsy.
Any similar experience/comments/etc would be much appreciated.
Akira.

Aren't exams and tests conducted BEFORE treatment these days?
I would think that the biopsy would precede ANY treatment.
Unless the doctor is inclined to pocket what he can bleed
from insurance companies.

I had been under the impression that surgery is not an option after
radiation therapy ??

I think that's generally right.
There are some surgeons that will attempt it, but the success rate
is not high whereas the complication rate is very high. I believe there
was a recent clinical trial underway for salvage surgery after radiation
and, if I remember correctly, the trial was halted because of the
discouraging outcomes.
