Howie, if your old computer's operating system is Windows ME, you are in for
headaches. It's up there with "Bob" as one of Microsoft's more glaring
mistakes. If you really want to use that machine, it would be better to get
a friend to help you wipe the disk clean and install Windows 98, Service
Pack 2. If you can spare the cash, buying a brand-new machine with Windows
XP is a much better choice. You can get a very good desktop system for $400
or even less if you shop carefully and use the monitor from the Windows ME
machine.

Howie, I'll concur with everything Alex says. I once was a mechanic, not
the professional type like yourself, but in gas stations, bus lots and junk
yards. And, I once was a manager of my company's information technology
including planning the network, installing it and purchasing all its
workstations and peripherals. I never met an engine I didn't like,
especially a Volkswagen's engine that can be pulled out of the rear with a
hydraulic jack. But computers are not intuitive and ME was the worst...
well, maybe the first WIN 95 was the worst.

Speaking as a veteran WinME user for 3.5 years, I can tell you it is
gathering dust behind me. I fire it up now and then just to remember
what blue screens looked like!! (VBG) Cost me a lot of money back
then.
I tried to upgrade to XP on that machine, but found out thru some major
diagnostics that the big company that built it in 2001 put in a crappy
motherboard from 1997.....which would not support XP. Now I know why
their tech kept *quietly* telling me NOT to upgrade....he knew.
Anyway.....I kept my costs under $900 Cdn for this machine by doing as
Alec suggests. I used the monitor, peripherals and speakers from the
old one. I do have it hooked up sometimes via a router, but rarely use
it.
I have absolutely NO idea how WebTV works cuz we don't offer advice on
those on the Microsoft news groups. But if you can find us, we still
have about 5 news groups for WinME running and we are there to answer
any questions you might ask. That might be all you need to fix up your
computer. Mike Maltby is the acknowledged *guru* of anything to do with
WinME. If you need help finding us......let me know. There are still a
few of those WinME computers out there.
Cheers.....Heather. (who should have bought 98 instead......timing,
dammit)

I run 98 on a $250 machine; ME on another (free) machine.
The 98 computer holds all my non-internet applications - WP, DB, off-
line readers, etc - and 4 HDs for file storage.
The ME computer is used ONLY for www and e-mail. If it should
ever be attacked by a virus/trojan, I won't lose 17 years of work.

It won't if you have a firewall and an antivirus and stay off the porn
sites (just kidding you on that last one). Get the free Zone Alarm and
either AVG, Avast! or EZ Trust. Your stuff will be totally safe. I ran
with just those (and spyware proggies) totally for all that time. Safe
hex works!!
