burning, bleeding 18 months aft. Rad

I am at 18 months after radiation and seed implants for prostate cancer.  My
PSA is now down to .19.
Doctor says all looks good.  The bad side is that for now 3 months I burn
every time I urinate.
And if it burns bad enough, I have a little blood at the end of urinating.
The burning seems to be in the urthea tube from the prostate out, but most
burning is right beneath my penis toward the end of it.  I think also this
is where the blood is coming from.
Is there no relief?  I have tried flomax again to my rad doc instructions,
urologist gave me some more pills that turn your urine yellow, but nothing
relieves the burning, and ultimate a little bleeding.
I have read  all these cases just like mine, but I have yet to read one
where anything helped but holding on, spitting, and groaning.
Anything out there at all...how long is this going to go on?   Thanks

He did rule out a bladder or kidney infection, didn't he??  I see he
gave you pills for one (turn your urine orange ones)......but I would
ask him if he did a simple lab test for a more resistant infection.
Guessing doesn't count!!  They can be quite painful.

Cheers......Heather

Burning and a hint of bleeding started for me at 18 months after IMRT
and Pd-103 seeds.  This is still going on at 26 months. It is slightly
improved.   I would not call this a bad side effect but it is
noticeable.

You reported this awhile ago.  I can't imagine what it must be like to have
it going on this long.  I have no answers for you, other than drinking more
water -- which you have probably already tried.

I'm not sure you will find this helpful or hopeful but you are not
completely alone.

My hubby takes a pill every day so that he can get his stream started
without gripping the towel bars, falling to his knees, and acting as if he's
trying to pass a kidney stone where his prostate used to reside. He's 4
years and 8 months out of treatment; he too had 5 weeks of radiation and
then seeds. The good news is that he can urinate normally if he's taking
something for it.

Recently his doc took him off of hytrin and had him try ALFUZOSIN HCL 10 MG
SA TAB. I can't tell you much other than this has worked better for him than
anything else. And it is time released so he only takes one per day.

He has never had blood in his urine.

I'm not a doctor but I suspect you have a little blood vessel involved and
that would cause a burning sensation. I think a urologist might be the one
who could "fix" the problem but I'm almost positive that a urologist is
going to try everything else first such as different medications.

After listining to the other comments; would there be a slight reddish rash?
If so, grab some Desinex and apply. That will keep the area dry and
comfortable. All sounds normal.....

Burning while urinating is _normal_?
Maaaann, that just doesn't get the message across; let me rephrase it:
Burning while urinating is *NORMAL*?
Yeah . . . THAT feels better. <:-)

And how, pray tell, do we get the Desinex inside the urethra? ROTFL? I
don't think so.  VBG

"... but most burning is right beneath my penis toward the end of it."

Tsk, tsk.

IP, I guarantee you that diaper rash caused by leaking and/or indirect flow
of urine dripping from the urethra opening onto the head of the penis
((below) will cause a sensation of burning.

And, unfortunately there are not alot of men who without a self examination
of the area can tell the difference as to exact location or PCa aged men who
remember what it was like to change a diaper....

Ease up my friend, read; and then, offer constructive comments.

I'm at radiation+27 months.  From radiation+18 months, I've had a
slight urethral burning or stinging and hint-of-pink at the first pee
in the morning.

This is definitely not diaper rash.

The burning is about mid-way up the inside of the tube to an inch in
from the opening.

The outside looks fine, smooth skin, veins, shiny head; stunningly
attractive, I'd call it.

kh on a more serious side of the discussion, in your case I would expect
three possible long-term side effects:

1. chronic bladder outlet obstruction.
2. urethral ulceration
3. urethral necrosis with resultant pelvic pain

With the most logical being, urethal ulceration. One would expect in this
case, increased urinary urgency and a burning or stinging sensation during
urination, similar to that of a bladder or prostate infection.

In my case after 57 months of Pd 103 seeds te closest I get is the chronic
bladder outlet obstruction. Normally I am only able to completely empty my
bladder 2-3 times a day and partial emptying the balance..... I drink 64 oz
of water a day....
To combat this I take 4.0 mg of Flomax twice a day.

It was a known side effect and one that I was willing to live with.

I guess I didn't have permission to mention my experiences?   OK.
I'll be quiet.

MAS - 09 Jan 2007 03:53 GMT
lol, the diaper rash thing was a last ditch try at helping him understand
possible causes based on his symtoms and what others had written. So it
wasn't necessarily applicable to you.

This path that we are all on is unique with experiences differing for
patient to patient. I think the support group is more about sharing the
unknown....

We are all guessing based on our own personal experiences which may or may
not apply to us.

Good luck with the stinging, only a specialist in Urology will know how to
approach your symptom..

As you say, our own experiences and perceptions sometimes helps others
in their journey.

Thanks for taking my comments as I intended, with humor.  (I've seen
newsgroup flame wars turn into death threats, which would be a pretty
odd idea in a cancer support group, now that I think about it.)

Anyway, I'm fairly certain that a largish percentage of rad-grads end
up with burning, stinging, and a little bleeding.  10%?  30%?  I don't
think anyone knows as this snuck up on me and for a long time, I didn't
realize I was bleeding.

-kh writing less here because I'm writing a couple books.

No thanks.  Nothing against Heather, but if I ever get this thing working
again, any extramarital activity with a Candadian will be with Shania.

Yeah.  You're right.  There is that 10-year spread between me and Shania.

You and I are much closer in age.   ;-)

William,

I just finished my treatment, iodine seeds 10/23, 35 IMRTs ended 1/3. I
had no serious problems but I did get a little urinary urgency with a
slight burning sensation. My doc said to take an Advil a couple of
times per day. He also said some showed improvement with cranberry
pills and saw palmetto. I did all three and my problems are almost nil.

My doc used to work at RCoG where they did over 10,000 seedings. He
personally did over 2,300, so he has had a lot of experience in this
area.

Hope this helps.

John
