Hi,

anyone know if the PSA level needs to be at a certain point before
fPSA can be accurately measured ?

Would the PSA need to be over {say} 0.5 ?

Thanks,

Canada Bob.

Hi Bob...I think the PSA needs to be around 2.5 or more for fPSA to
have significance...Happy Holidays, ron

By "significance" do you mean ability to detect it Ron ???

Just wondering if fPSA can be detected {reliably} if at all if the PSA
is less than 0.5 ?

Other than that, are folks {in here} getting the fPSA tests or the PCA3
tests done ?

The free PSA can be detected when total PSA is less than 2.5, but
studies showing fPSA to be a useful indicator (e.g. if % fPSA < 15%,
then that's an indicator that PCa is present) have not included men
with tPSA below about 2.5

>From my readings of this and other PCa NGs, it seems a fair number of
men get a fPSA test during the diagnosis process.  The PCA3 test has
been shown to be a sensitive test for PCa, but the problem with it is
that it requires the doc to due a "vigorous" prostate massage in order
to express the protein being detected.  Unless you use a doc who really
knows how to give the "PCA3 massage", results can be equivocal.
