Israel Barken, MD has been a fixture of the PCa community for many years.

He was one of the three medics who answered my plea for advice on P2P.
That's "Patient to Physician" http://www.prostatepointers.org/p2p/

I'm surprised and disappointed that there is anyone in our community who
has not at least heard of him.

P2P's archives of solid advice from PCa specialists is nine years long.

One can post one's prostate cancer digest (PCD) and receive free advice
from specialists who ordinarily charge upwards of $300 per hour. That's
what I did and it saved my life.

Regards,

Steve J

Hello All--

I personally have a low opinion of any doctor who ingratiates himself
into these public forums by any means (incl. groupies).  Even worse is
to advertise in them (I have seen dr. b promote his own "show' on yahoo
ng.)  Better to let someone else do it.

I don't think it's a coincidence that a regular devotee of a certain
group of doctors who fit into above category told a terminal patient
recently, "You need to get a coach and I suggest Coach Barken."
(That's what he calls himself.)

And on it goes, day in day out.

I think all doctors should stay away from NGs and MLs unless they post
anonymously or they want to describe their experiences as a patient.
It just muddies the waters.

You, SJ, are entitled to your opinion and I'm entitled to mine.

I didn't mean to suggest above poster had any motive other than inform
the public.  That's a good thing.

Upon second glance I see that the promotion for dr barken's show
contains a solicitation for funds.  That turns me off, too.

The yahoo group is basically a newsletter about certain docs.  You just
can't stop hearing about them. One of them, dr. myers, held a
conference recently.  After posting an adoring review one regular
wrote:  "I am suggesting that you all go out and patronize the
following cos. which sponsored the conference."  Then he listed about
15 names most of which were drug cos.  Even if you want to oblige it's
kind of hard -- are you supposed to get yourself on a certain drug or
maybe send in a donation.

Too much is too much.

I'm on his e-mail list because my wife and I attended one of his
monthly support group meetings.  I could/should have editted that
particular e-mail and removed the solicitation before posting it here.

Reading the above I'm glad we have our National Health Service, where such
practices are impossible.
