i was shocked after 1 hr drive home and taking a 30 min walk to find
that my pad, shorts and pants were soaked with urine.
the urine was flowing freely as though the catheter was still attached
.
when they took out the catheter,  i was able to stop and start the
flow.
when i did nothing the urine just kept dripping out.
when i tried to pee in the toilet there was nothing.
it looks like that is why i got soaked.
i have been told that it will normalize over a short time like days or
weeks.
someone else told me that it is due to the  enlarged diam of the
urethra from the catheter.
others have said that it is do to inflamation and trama.
i got some depends to allow me to at least go for a few hrs at a time
and to sleep at night.
i am freaked about sleeping with this tonight.  i will probably have to
keep getting up to check if i need to change my depends.

Naah. Lying or sitting shuts off the flow for the vast majority. You're
in the same (sinking) boat as most of us were at this point. The odds
are that this, too, shall pass, or at least diminish greatly over the
next week or year. I flowed freely for months, yet wet the bed (i.e.,
overflowed the diaper) only 2 or 3 times, one of them nearly a year
post-RP. Hooray for disposable or washable incontinence mattress pads,
found on the shelves besides the Depends.

Your doctor was highly remiss in not telling you to expect this. If you
wouldn't expect to do chin-ups right after a shoulder reconstruction,
you shouldn't expect your traumatized sphincter to do ITS job this soon.
Those guys who can play rugby dry the day they chuck the bag are from
some other planet.

I agree it's quite unnerving, but you most likely will be much improved
in a few short weeks.

BTW I shared your concern about sleeping.  In the end everything turned
out much better for me than I had expected.  Be sure to try and get a
walk in everyday if you can.  It helps.
