Wife retiring, cutting back expenses, high speed connection gone (and so
is the 30 a day virus emails I was still getting). Back to dial up. Oh
well. Guess what? New Earthlink account, two emails the first day, one
from Earthlink welcoming me to their service, the other SPAM ! Heather,
how could the spammers get my new email address before I even signed on for
the first time? Then I get an email, supposedly from Earthlink, telling me
to contract them immediately because there was a problem with my account
information. And, if I did not they would cancel my account. When I,
stupidly may I admit, clicked on the web link I got a "Cannot open page"
error. So I contacted Customer Service. You guessed it. A fraudulent web
site getting peoples' charge card information. It had been shut down the
day before, so that is why I did not get the web page to come up. But I
could, and if I did some sob would be charging it up on my credit card.
Great life. The final indignity is that I have several emails from the
"Postmaster" saying that a message that I never sent, to an address I never
heard of, could not be delivered. Each has an attachment. I was at least
smart enough to not open those, but again, this is a new account not even a
week old. How the %#@& did they get the email information so fast? Where
do I go to get some secure email service on the internet? Or is there any
security out there? Is it the lawless old west, cutthroat and merciless.
This is getting too long isn't it?
Anyway, still using 4 to 5 pads per day. Really bummed out about that.
On 50 mg. Viagra right now. No sign of life, but seeing Mike's message does
give me hope. Eleven months for him, I am closing in on 90 days. That
visit, and PSA test, is next Monday afternoon. Wonder how long it will take
to get the test results? Bet that will be a long wait.
Take care everybody.
Thank you.

Hey, You do sound troubled. Do you have a good virus program #1. Does the
server quarantine messages that are undesireable.?
If you answer yes to both questions you are half way there.
Do you screen your messages as they come in?
Do not allow attachemnts from anyone unless you know them amd want them.
Avoid mail like Microsoft.

I don't know, David, but it happened to me too when I signed up for a
German news server (CIS.DFN). In no time flat, my account got a lot of
spam in German. But I use a 'throw-away' account for any sign-ups on
the 'net. Usually Hotmail or Yahoo.
FWIW......I am getting at least 30-50 porn/spam/viruses on my dialup
account that I haven't used for a year now.
A secure email account? There is one (and probably more). And I don't
think it costs all that much. Go to www.spamcop.net and read about
their spam-free stuff. I have a friend who uses it and I believe that
they 'vet' every email that comes in and ask you if it is kosher. If it
is, then they allow the email through. If not, bye bye.
I noticed it the first time I wrote him at home (another Dave,
sigh)......he had to approve me as a friend before they would let me
through. Good idea. I use their website to report spam and have done
so for years. That part is free.
But with retirement and cutting back......just use Mailwasher for all
accounts and delete the junk. There are simply too many ways for
unscrupulous spammers to get your address......and I can't keep up with
them.
Cheers.....Heather

Sure makes one wonder, given what Heather experienced too.
The Postmaster ones started coming in 24 hours after I changed e-mail accounts
(not ISP).
Anyway, I use Pop Peeper.
Why? Well, just before I decided to change e-mails, I was getting MailWasher
Popups on certain web pages.
IT ticked me off !
Each has different features but so far Pop Peeper has nothing to sell (as a
"come on")
http://www.mailwasher.net/ Bounce e-mails? I thought that was exactly the wrong
thing to do? Something about bounce e-mails causing net jams?
http://www.poppeeper.com/ I set "delete immediate" which means it disappears as
soon as I select one, as opposed to disappearing at the next scheduled e-mail
check.
Anyway, FWIW

Hi J.....
Never heard of Popup Peeper, but I use Popup Stopper sometimes when
surfing.
I NEVER bounce emails.......for the very reason you state.....and the
added reason that they are fake return addresses.
I use Spamcop to report a lot of them. I have both dialup and cable on
here and use Mailwasher for the dialup (and that ISP will not allow me
to bounce emails).......the Rogers cable stuff I just report to Spamcop
(who in turn vet my Mailwasher as part of the process).......and get
them banned. www.spamcop.net for a free page of your own to report it.
Makes me feel real good to report the porn.......but Steve K. insists
that I have to send him copies of it......sigh!! (gotcha!!)

Ha! That's great. I can still remember trying to start a BBS. I wanted to
be the first such site by a business of our kind. I had to bring in a
14,400 modem from home because we couldn't get a requisition for a $200
28.8. That was 1995. By April 1997, we had one of the first websites in
our business going out on a T1 and my company paid for it all. My how times
change.

I now have a new email account at USA.NET, use mail washer pro and have
received no spam in my mailbox since the move. My old yahoo mailbox is
getting 30-50 spams a day but all of it is filtered into "Junk" and
automatically deleted daily. The filter I use is that if the mail is not
addressed to my new email address it is spam. I also no longer use the free
news account that comes with yahoo. I subscribe to a service and have
purchased a reader. Cost me a few bucks but it has been worth it. Shorty
