since this is national prostate cancer awareness week.  i've not seen
nor heard of one news item in my area on this subject.

my 38 year son wanted to have his psa done this year to establish a
baseline.

so i took the initiative and called the oncology center and was asking
about psa screenings.   they transferred me around and i finally ended
up with the director in charge of the center.

she asked how old the sons were and when i explained to her about the
history of pca in my family, she had no problem with getting them in.

in fact, they are running a FREE screening tonight for two different
businesses.  i found that interesting in the fact that they are offering
this for the local industry, but it wasn't announced that the community
could come in.

the director informed me that they have had a good turn out for tonight.
about 200 men are coming in and they have 3 urologists that are donating
their time.

she is going to make space for my sons to come in during this time and
instructed me to tell the sons when they see the receptionist that it
has been cleared through her in case there is a problem.

so, i called my sons and told them of this event.   it involves the psa
blood test and a DRE.  the results will be mailed to their homes
privately.

the one son - who is 34 this year, said, "i'll do the blood test but i'm
not having anyone poking around my rear end!!!!"

i told him that sooner or later, he is going to have to had it done.

"oh, no it won't", he exclaimed.

i'm wondering why the cancer center is doing the free screenings for
prostate cancer for businesses, but not for the community.  and of
course, i was surprised by the verbal response of my youngest son.

but it's like a told him.

"your grandfather died from prostate cancer.   your father had prostate
cancer.  and i've got three sons.  what do you think the chances of at
least one of you having prostate are?"

i would interject some humor into this post and mention that my youngest
son was the type that gave the finger to society and did things his way.
strange how in just a matter of a few years,  society will be giving him
the finger and doing things their way.........

knowledge is power - growing old is mandatory - growing wise is optional
"Many more men die with prostate cancer than of it. Growing old is
invariably fatal. Prostate cancer is only sometimes so."

There was an 8 page section in the Toronto Star dedicated to prostate
cancer on Sept. 18th which was quite interesting......link is above.
Dr. Klotz of Sunnybrook had two articles on PSA in it.  He and my guy
(Dr. Loblaw) flew out to Calgary to present their findings on that trial
that Ron quoted.  I would assume Dr. Klotz was the primary presenter as
he is the Head of Urology.  Andrew is our rad onc.

Anyway....I was in stitches today to see a half page ad for a very high
end men's clothier which showed a male with pants down around his ankles
and the caption "What to wear for your prostate examination" or
something similar.  LOL.  Seems that it is now coming out of the closet.
