question regarding the sling

I've been a 1+ pad/day dripper since surgery three years ago and the
constant moisture around little Winkie is causing skin irritation that
is resulting in a constricted foreskin and general irritation.  Doc
told me that while a circumcision will eliminate the foreskin problem
there will still be inflammation around the area due to the constant
moisture.  Desenex could help a bit short term but it's pretty messy
and isn't a solution.  The AMS 800 is for guys with more incontinence
than I have and usually doesn't eliminate the drips.  His only other
suggestion is a sling.  My concern is how well it works and how much of
that is the luck of the draw.  Too little control and I'm right where I
am now, too much and the urine might not come out at all.  Could any of
you guys with slings or knowledge about same offer any information
regarding the procedure and the results?  Much thanks.  By the way, PSA
still <0.1 - that was good news today.

Hi Dave,

Here's what I posted in December 2005:

"........... it's been 6 weeks since I had a sling installed
with a goal of reaching an acceptable level of continence. At 18 months
after RRP, I was going through 1 to 3 man pads per normal day and more if  I
played golf or participated in strenuous activity. My chart showed that I
had reached this level at about 6 months and no subsequent improvement was
being made.

The surgery was outpatient and took about an hour; 6 hours if you include
pre and post op.  I was dry immediately after removing the catheter the next
day.  It took about two weeks for the incisions to heal and during this time
sitting was extremely difficult as the sling is installed right where you
sit.

At six weeks I'm still dry although I've squirted a few drops or teaspoons a
couple of times when doing strenuous activity without voiding.  So I'd say
I'm 97%+ dry with NO pads.  With a foot of snow on the ground, I can't say
how dry I'll be playing golf.  I'll know better in mid January when we reach
Arizona for our Wintering over.

At six weeks I can still fell the effects of the sling. My crotch is usually
pained by the end of the day and I'm still a little numb in the area. But it
improves a bit each day. Hopefully by 8 weeks, I'll be back to normal but
DRY! The nice thing about the sling is that it's a passive device; no
switches or devices to fail."

It's now 10 1/2 months since the surgery and I'm still 97%+ dry and only use
a very light pad when doing strenuous activity.  I haven't heard of anyone
suffering from too much restriction after the sling is installed.

Based on my experience I can highly recommend the procedure.

Best of luck

Don

Thanks, Don, for your reply.  It is very encouraging.  My doctor has
put me on a steroid cream for a few weeks to clear things up and I have
opted out of pads for at least three or four hours during the day in
addition to my sleep hours when I don't need them anyway.  I hope by
minimizing the dampness in that area things will clear up.  If not, I
will most likely become a fellow slinger.  Thanks again.
