A woman in another newgroup said that motherwort,
a medicinal herb you can buy without prescription,
relieved her menopausal hot flushes.

According to the Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motherwort)
it also also combats stress and promotes relaxation
during pregnancy.  That may be just the ticket for us
old fellows.

If any of you hormone therapy guys decide to try it, please
tell us the results.

Were you planning on a pregnancy? LOL

Seriously. I've studied herbs and continue to do so, but I do not use them
aside from the ones we use for cooking or decorating. Occasionally I have
used an herb as a poultice. The problem with so many of these things is they
can be deadly if taken in the wrong amounts. Motherwart (Leonurus cardiaca)
has cardiac implications (it's right there in the name!) and I would not
want to chance that on myself or on a baby I was carrying. The article
itself shows the differing views where one should use it during childbirth
and the other herbalist says not to use it. This is a standard problem with
many herbs used for medicinal purposes. Three drops is good and 5(?) can
kill you! Forget it I won't bother.

Unless some big pharmaceutical company is bottling it and can assure that
they are not providing a lethal dose I wouldn't touch it. But often what
they are apt to provide is so small a dose that it has little effect.
Sitting down and relaxing with a nice cup of tea (or beverage of your
choice) will probably have about the same effect.

Personally, I think men are not as good about relaxing as women. Men seem to
think that getting caught up in a football game is relaxing. It's different
from the everyday stresses; it can be fun, but it is not relaxing. It's just
a different adrenaline rush. If we all took 10 minutes twice a day and did
nothing but clear our heads of the day's problems, we'd probably all do
better.
