Hi, folks...
Someone on another list I read mentioned recently that he is 70.... and his
doctor does not do PSA tests on him because "at his age, it wouldn't really
make any difference since PCa is slow growing." The doctor also told him
that most men develop PCa in their 50s and 60s, so if he doesn't have it by
now, he probably never well. I've never heard that one, either.
I urged him to have the PSA checked and to keep records of his results over
time. He replied that he has extensive blood tests done every six
months.... and the doctor said that some of those tests would indicate if
PSA might be high. If so, the doctor would then do the PSA test. I've
never heard of *other blood tests* that indicate if PSA is elevated. Anyone
know if there is any truth to this? Just for my information.
I know the PSA is just a tool.... but it seems ludicrous to me that there is
a very simple blood test that men can have and a doctor chooses not to do it
on an annual basis. My uncle was diagnosed at 72.... by PSA... and his
doctor encouraged him to watch and wait. He died 3 years later.... My dad
was later diagnosed at 72.... and was treated with seeds.... and is still
going strong at 78 with no recurrence.
I asked this guy what the longevity factor in his family was. He said many
people reached their 90's. Sheesh.... and his doc is just going to dismiss
this as something that will *probably not happen*??
Thanks for any input...

Nowadays, living full vibrant lives into the 90s is common.
To not check is just burying your head in the sand. If you
tell me that regardless of what the PSA is, you want NO
treatments ever, then I'd agree that there's no need to
check your PSA. But, YOU have to tell me that. Not me
telling you.
I have a picture of a patient of mine. I did a daVinci robotic
laparoscopic Prostatectomy (dVP) on him at the age of
77yo. The picture was taken 4-weeks after his surgery while
he was back riding his favorite horse with a huge grin.

Thank you for your reply, Dr. Yew. This guy I'm referring to seems content
to just accept what his doctor has said... and that's it. I've encouraged
him to go ahead and get the PSA test done.... but.... ??
But... are there other blood tests that *might* indicate if PSA is elevated,
as his doctor has suggested to him?
Again, I appreciate your input.
Regards.... MikeH

Not really. Sounds like he's thinking one of his other "routine" labs
would hint at what his PSA might be. Tea leaves would probably be
more accurate.

Tell him to get another doctor or just go to a urologist and ask for a PSA
test. He also might check with the American Cancer Society in his area and
see if they are having any free or reduced cost PSA testing done in his
area. As patients we have the right to demand just about any simple test we
desire! Also insurance companies tend to pay for these tests without
question.

Medicare covers PSA tests (30 years after PAP tests were approved).

PAP's have been around a lot longer. The PSA is the new guy on the block.

I have tried to tell him, Bev. But he *has faith in his doctor's
judgement*. I've explained my situation with PCa.... as well as that of my
father and uncle. He thanked me for my concern, but seems content to not
pursue the test. He said he had some thorough xrays a couple of years ago
that showed that he had an enlarged prostate but no signs of cancer. Duh!!
:(
At least I tried. I hope he doesn't one day have reason to second guess his
doctor's call on this.
It just irritates me that there are still people out there who are happy to
let their doctor decide what is best for them.... when there is so much
information for them to make sure they are getting the very *best* of care.
Hopefully, it will not ever be of concern to him....
Take care.... Mike :)

No, the real hope is that he dies of something else first!
I have a couple of friends are like that - who just go with whatever the
doctor says. They figure they are paying the doctor big bucks to take care
of their health. I'm sorry but I think we are responsible for our own
health.
Of course I say that and I've failed to have one test done that I probably
should have done, so I'll go hang my head in shame.

Amen! And any doctor that doesn't want to deal with an *informed patient*
is not one I would want to be seeing anyway!
