peein' the bed

I haven't wet the bed since I was a young boy, probably no more than 6
or 7 years old.  I would dream I was urinating and low and behold, the
wetness would awaken me and there I was, lying in my "wet spot."  Now,
55 years later, I was still dry at night after surgery in 2003 until
this month when, at age 63, I twice now had "the dream" and I wet the
bed.  I'm sure this is not connected physically to the surgery but am I
having some kind of wacky psycho connection between a focus on
incontinence, pads, etc., and dreaming about peeing?  Does this occur
normally as we age?  Of course having one sphincter left doesn't help
but and I doomed to wearing a pad to bed?  Am I the only one?  Any
ideas, comments?

It may be related to your surgery? What kind of operation did you have?
How's your daytime control? Force of stream?
2 possibilities come to mind. Unstable bladder or OAB-type symptoms or
a bladder-neck contracture (scar) from your surgery. If you had the da
Vinci
robotic laparoscopic Prostatectomy (dVP), bladder neck contractures are
exceedingly rare (<1%). But, after open prostate surgery, they can be
more
common. Maybe 5-10%. Ask your urologist if he/she thinks you need a
cysto
(look inside urethra and bladder with camera). If you do have a bladder
neck
contracture, a relatively small operation may be needed, and you'd be
back
to your baseline probably.

I'm quite sure it is not physically connected to the surgery.  I had
laparoscopic surgery, daytime control is about 80-90% (still wear a
pad, 1+ per day, less if I choose to visit the bathroom every hour or
two).  Force of stream is fine - there is no contracture
(constriction?).  The only part of my incontinence that might be
treatable is the small quirts I get with a near empty bladder (possibly
small bladder spasms).  I don't get these when the bladder is full - I
think the weight of the urine helps to close off the urethra.  The
little leaks could possibly be controlled with meds but considering the
larger overall level of incontinence, they're not worth the bother and
possible side effects of the meds.

I have wet myself in bed twice since RRP.  Both times during a dream that I
was going to bathroom.  I don't think it's an age-only thing.

Dave, you are certainly not alone.

I'm sneakin' in this response before I.P. posts.  :-)

I have had the same dream a few times over a year after open RRP...even
though I'm fine during the day.

If it happens...I wake up with a 6 inch wet spot...and then go to the
bathroom.

Reasons?...depth of sleep...any wine or liquid during the evening?

Overly tired from activity and thus a deeper sleep?

Don't be overly concerned...but if you ARE...maybe a small wad of T.P.
in your jockeys at bedtime.

Be well,

Ron B.

I had my RP in 2002.  I got quickly continent, and still am except for
diminished capacity and/or ability to "hold it" too long.  I had two
definite bed-wetting episodes and 2 more close calls where I caught myself
as I was starting.  Always happened as I was dreaming about urinating
(Remember those other kind of wet-dreams?---didnt mind those.).  I wear a
pad when I am travelling or sleeping in someone else's bed.  A side-effect
for me, however, has been getting up every couple of hours to urinate.
Sometimes even more frequently.  It's worse than when I had an enlarged
prostate. I think this time its related to my fear of wetting the bed.  If I
start to feel the urge, I wake up and go to the bathroom.  A "good" night's
sleep for me is only getting up twice.

I have been continent when sitting or lying since I abandoned my post-op
catheter, except for soaking the bed twice, at maybe one mo and 6-8 mo
post-op. I finally put the mattress pads back in the closet at maybe 18
months post-op.

The two times I cut loose in my sleep were nights I was physically
exhausted, which I strive for every windy day. I had probably also taken
a Benadryl antihistamine to help me sleep. I often dream I'm peeing,
but it's always a) dry and b) because I really, REALLY have to pee. So I
finally wake up and go to the bathroom. If I don't have to pee at least
once during the night, I'm dehydrated, and that's not healthy.

But there's no way I'm going to bed sans diaper or pad in the
foreseeable future. The hassle of changing bedding in the middle of he
night isn't worth the slight risk. I gotta wear SOMETHING . . . why not
a diaper or pad?

Of COURSE my bed-wetting is RRP-related, just as is my daytime
incontinence. Neither problem existed on Oct 28, 2004, and both existed
in November, 2004. The only changes were that I a) was month older and
b) had had my urinary system ripped apart. You tell me which change more
likely left me incontinent, a or b.

I've been able to pee over a higher wall than any race horse (because he
doesn't pee standing on his hind legs) -- and in Morse code via
sphincter control -- since the day I removed my catheter, but that
doesn't seem to affect my daytime dribbling, which is probably worse
when my bladder is nearly empty than when full.
