Here is an update on my condition. It is very, very promising. After a
laproscopic RRP five weeks ago I got my first PSA test and it was
undetectable. Great news!!!!

Here are the facts: pre op- 5.0 psa, normal DRE,  biopsy showed 3 out of 12
cores positive all on one lobe, Gleason 6. Post op Gleason 7, with cancerous
cells in both lobes but clear margins.

Note that the biopsy is a hit or miss thing. Out of six cores on one lobe,
none showed cancer, but the post op pathology report did.

So, how did it all go. After sugery which was pretty easy given that it was
done laproscopically, I came home the next day and sat around for two weeks
until the catheter was removed. I hated that damn catheter!!!

That night I was pretty dry, but the next day I went to work and essentially
100% of my urine ended up in the pads I was wearing. I went through 6 or so
each day, several of which were soaked. But about 10 days later I had a
breakthrough and only wet two pads. Today I am still wearing a pad, but it
is only damp at the end of 24 hours. I expect to eliminate the pad in about
a month. So the incontinence thing is almost under control.

Erectile function is another story. I can see a little bit of tumescence
with a lot of stimulation, but it is still really floppy. But surprise,
surprise, I can masterbate to an orgasm even with a floppy penis. I wouldn't
have believed this possible but it happened, 2-3 times even. It wasn't much
of an orgasm. Well, you know the saying, even the worst sex is wonderful.
Well that wasn't the case. The orgasm was the puniest I have experienced,
but hey, it felt ok.

So, I saw my urologist today and he gave me the great PSA news, as well as a
prescription for Levitra. He said give it a try, it might work. I will
experiment (well my wife may not appreciate that comment) this weekend and
if succesful, I will post the results (only the facts and nothing but the
facts).

David- almost dry, but floppy.

Sounds good to me. Floppy is a non issue at your stage. You can have
orgasms with a floppy drive. ;) Your dryness seems to be ahead of the
curve. Keep on keeping on... seems like you are on the road to a fast
recovery and a cured future, and less wimpy orgasms albeit different.

I guess we are all old enough to remember 5.25" floppy discs that
really were floppy (heck, I even have an 8" floppy on my office wall to
scare the young pups I work with). So we all know that the current 3.5"
"floppies" are not as floppy as the older discs.

Strange but true - in South Africa they call the 3.5" ones "stiffies".
Thus "Have you seen my stiffy?" Reply, "no, and I don't want to, but I
heard it's only 3.5" - please give my condolences to your wife".

lol!

I'm still using the "3.5" floppy" until the "technology" improves.
An 8" floppy, hmmmm. This a case where bigger is better! Although I
could skip the part where it's nailed to the wall. ;)

ROTFL

I guess most of us grew up with 33's, 45's and even a few 78's. Remember how
sometimes you'd get a floppy 45 in a magazine? You could also make some cool
stuff with computer punch cards. Now kids only know CD's, DVD's, and chips.
You just push a button and it works. With that in mind, personally, I think
my husband could use an upgrade to his drive. The memory is still good,
everything appears to be in working order, it's been cleaned and blown out,
but it still doesn't work like it should.

It is quite common for the Gleason score to go up when the pathologist
examines the entire prostate after surgery for the reasons you give.
Also, prostate cancer is usually widely spread throughout the prostate,
although this may not be obvious in the presurgical biopsy.   In my
case, the Gleason score didn't go up, which was fortunate since it
started at 7=3+4.  But, as in your case, cancer was found in both lobes
despite only being found in one lobe on biopsy.  My pre-surgical PSA was
similar to yours and my margins were also clear.   Although you can't
generalize from individual cases, perhaps you will take some comfort in
the fact that, in my case, after five years, there has been no evidence
of recurrence.

Again, sounds similar to what happened to me.

It took me a while for orgasms to return and it took 18 months for
erections to return, so it seems you are way ahead of my schedule.

For me, Viagra initially did nothing, but eventually it started working.
It is worth trying these drugs periodically.  Meanwhile, if nothing
happens after a month or so, you might consider either injections or the
use of a pump.  I used a pump for about 18 months with satisfactory
results.  If you worry too much about erections, that anxiety itself
will make things more difficult.   It is important to realize that with
patience and some experimentation, despite any obstacles,  it is
possible to resume a relatively normal sex life.

That is fantastic news, David!!  You had good numbers going in.  I have high
expectations for your recovery.

> until the catheter was removed. I hated that damn catheter!!!

I do believe that is a universal concept.

Hello David, You are an Early Bird, and with your success.
Do not expect quick results but slow improvement.  Keep it up, and be glad
the cancer is gone.
Orgasm is different, and since no fluid passed.  It is different, but still
does the job.
Love your wife, and be Thankful to the Dr.
Good wishes,
John Loomis
