I am eleven days post op. Am experiencing moderate anal pain when I sit or
stand for extended time. Get relief from pain meds prescribed post op. Is
this a common post op symptom? Your experiences and advice please. Thanks

Although I associated the pain with the area from which the prostate
had been removed, rather than the anus, I experienced rather intense
pain while sitting for extended periods after my surgery (robotic
radical prostatectomy). It was most noticeable when driving and I sat
on a stack of two pillows for comfort. The pain began to fade about
five to six weeks out from surgery and is a distant memory nine months
later. I hope your pain will disappear soon.

i remember my post op period where i was going through mood swings. i
had the abdominal swelling from surgery and discomfort where the 25
staples were, and i had the fullness feeling and discomfort in my butt
as well as i was sitting there. i had just finished having a good cry
from the hormone swing and said to myself, "i guess i just got in touch
with my feminine side".
(hope the women appreciated that one or as someone said, "i feel your
pain")
it took about a month or two after surgery for the swelling to go down
and i haven't have the discomfort that you are talking about since.
hope this helps,

Hi.
You're very early after surgery and I think that most of us have had the
type of discomfort that you describe.
I had the open RP over a year ago and remember similar discomfort.
The prostate is so close to the rectum that the pain is pretty common.
Sitting on the toilet and harder chairs make it worse...of course.
I recall using a foam donut for a month or so. That may help you.
As the others have said...it should get better and better as time goes
on.
Best wishes,
Ron B.

I had the same feeling, only longer. I'm 19 months post op from robotic
surgery and I still feel some dull aches and pains in that area at
times. I know that something definitely was operated on! It should
gradually become less and less noticeable over time. But that said, each
of us can respond differently to the same treatment and heal at our own
pace.

About a month post op for me that pain became severe. I couldn't pee
without intense pain. I had a bladder and maybe urethra infection and
had to have a dilation done. I had become immune to Cipro, took 10
days to figure that out, but Keflex (antibiotic) and the dilation fixed
it. However, now 4 months RP it's all coming back, I see the uro
tomorrow, I suspect a reinfection. I've had 9 radiation treatments, 31
to go, and it could be that, although I don't think so. I drive
approximately 150 miles everyday for the treatments. I probably need a
do-nut to sit on.
Good luck

I've never had a RP but if two babies and a hysterectomy count I'd say what
you are feeling is pretty normal. I'd suggest you do not scrub the kitchen
floor or clean the bathtub.
Honestly everyone heals at a different rate. Just be careful for a while.
When they say it takes six weeks to heal in there believe them! Real pain
is quite different from a general ache; pain is your body's way of saying
something is wrong. Eleven days is not a long time, pain should diminish
with each passing day as the body heals. If you are feeling more then a
general feeling of having had surgery in that area then maybe you'd best get
back in touch with the doctor.
I'm assuming you still have a cath? That could also be causing some
discomfort and putting pressure on the rectum.

I had occasional pain for a few seconds after ordinary hernia surgery .
. . one to two YEARS after surgery. The surgeon said that didn't
surprise him, given that he couldn't find his favorite scalpel after
surgery.
OK, just kidding . . . about the scalpel. My PAIN was due to scar tissue
still forming and binding and adjusting.
At 11 days, you may as well have just rolled out of the OR. If you're
still in serious, sharp pain in a couple more weeks, or still hurting in
6 months, I'd want to know why. In the meantime, that's what drugs are
for. Get some, and if you get addicted, no big deal; 'fess up and get
the addiction treated. Pain takes a toll on our bodies and our minds,
and just plain sucks. Make sure your doctor takes care of both your pain
and YOU; if he just says "take these narcotics for a couple of weeks",
consider finding a more attentive doctor for your pain management. This
ain't a surgeon's field of expertise.

I had discomfort in my bottom for weeks, months really, after the
surgery. I used a donut cushion for a long time, but it did eventually
go away. The uro kept telling me it was "normal", although here I
could only find one other guy that had the same experience with the
pain/soreness/discomfort lasting more than a few days.
Good luck.

My husband's surgeon had to do "fingertip dissection" to remove the
prostate from the rectum. It was stuck to the rectum, I guess. Steve
was sore for a long, long time. Plus he had never been completely
un-sore after the biopsy before the RP (2 months prior). That biopsy
was bad news. I'm wondering if it caused the prostate to attach
un-normally to the rectum? Anyway, the soreness was normal for him.
Especially when in one position (especially sitting) for a while. He
used a blow-up donut from Walgreens for a while. A few days. But
after that it was too much hassel or something, and he just made sure
to move around rather than sit in one space. But 11 days post-op is
not long. laurel
