Has anyone had a prostatectomy of any sort while under regional
anesthesia, i.e. spinal/epidural?
This I might consider for the robotic procedure but not sure if it has
been done. Will ask doc but just curious.

NO WAY for the robotic as far as I know. You will not even know that you
are being knocked out, and when you awake, you will not remember what
you were doing or know where you are. But all that soon subsides. (Kind
of reminds me of some of the parties that I attended in my more youthful
days).

It is quite common to do an RRP that way. There are supposed to be
some advantages in terms of pain control and recovery immediately after
surgery. Mine was done under general anesthesia because my surgeon and
hospital preferred it that way, but Walsh, for example, prefers to use
the epidural method.

I find it hard to believe that a robotic procedure would be done that
way, but it would depend on the surgeon. You certainly don't want to
try to tell your surgeon which method of anesthesia to use. In any
case, because of the drugs they give you, you wouldn't remember anything
about the surgery in any case.

My RRP surgeon would have used an epidural if I had not also been
getting colon surgery at the same time; colon surgery is too high up the
torso for an epidural.

Mine was an epidural. Aside from putting my illium asleep for several days,
it was great.

My Robotic LRP was done with a general anesthetic --- the warm towel was
the last thing I remember until I woke up.

After having experienced 2 off Spinal/Epidural Anaesthesias in 10
months, I've decided to become a "DALEK" lol.
Unfortunately, all the Kits available Online are 1/8 Scale Models,
only :-((

I asked, but my surgeon advised not. I followed his advice and I was
quite comfortable after with the pump.

RRP, Dec 2, 02 and I'm doing just fine.

Do you really want to be conscious but immobilised and too sedated to
actually do anything except listen to a Walkman for 5+ hours? Most
surgeons prefer you completely out - one less thing to worry about. If
you have respiratory or circulatory issues, then that's another story.

I was hooked up to an epidural for pain and put to sleep for ... well... I
guess convenience. The epidural continued for a day or two after surgery.
I was absolutely pain-free for those two days.
