Hytrin vs Flomax

I was reading some old posts and someone mentioned that they became dizzy
from taking Hytrin for urination problems.  I too had dizzy spells and rapid
heartbeat while taking Hytrin.  When I switched to Flomax, the dizziness
decreased and my heartbeat returned to normal.  Flomax is much more
expensive than Hytrin but works using a lower dose of alpha blocker.

Any Alpha blocker is capable of causing dizziness, that's why most Drs.
suggest taking them at bedtime.

My understanding is that alpha blockers such as Hytrin were created to
lower blood pressure. One of the side effects turned out to be improved
urination for some men.  Woody, perhaps your dizziness was caused by
the Hytrin lowering your blood pressure to below normal. Flomax, a
newer alpha blocker, is less likely to affect blood pressure. (Stephen
N. Rous, M.D. The Prostate Book, Newly Revised and Updated, 2001, page
111.)

This happened to me the first time I took Flowmax.  I had a big
drop in blood pressure, got dizzy, couldn't stand up, almost
passed out.  Later, I took it again and did okay with it.  Perhaps
I got used to it.

If the cost of the Flowmax is a significant problem, you could
try Hytrin again, starting with a lower dose.  It's possible
that the lower dose is all you need, and also possible that your
body will adapt to it and the negative reactions cease.

However, be careful with it.  Cut the dose well down to start
with and only build it up if you really need to.

You can also do the same with Flowmax.  If you're doing okay
on a particular dose, try a lower dose and see if it still solves
your problem.

With any drug, we're usually better off taking the lowest
effective dose.

Woody...men using Flomax should be aware that it causes an increased
complication rate in men undergoing cataract surgery.  If a man is
using Flomax and is anticipating cataract surgery, he should inform his
doc about his Flomax use...ron
