If certain dietary supplements, herbals, diuretics (water pills), or
laxatives are causing your symptoms of low potassium, you should avoid
taking these products and consult with your doctor.

Long and informative article there.

Congratulations on your PSA, glad to hear it.

I think so. Talk to a pharmacist.  They are usually really helpful
about these things.

See this http://www.drugs.com/hctz.html.  It has warnings about taking
potassium.

This is a study:
http://general-medicine.jwatch.org/cgi/content/full/1992/303/1  "After
two months, serum potassium levels were significantly lower (by 0.4 to
0.88 mmol/l) in patients taking HCTZ than in those taking placebo, even
when HCTZ was supplemented."

Howie, I also take HCTZ (Hydrochlorothiazide) 25MG daily, and it is a
diuretic (water pill). My potassium tends to run on the low side. My doctor
does not have me taking any potassium supplements, other than eating more
bananas, etc. Shortly after my heart attack in April 2001, I wound up in the
ER with heart palpitations, and was given potassium due to low potassium
levels. Haven't had any problems since.

Yes.  A diuretic.  It took mine down very nicely.

I use No-Salt instead of table salt, it's loaded with potassium.

My wife was in tears three nights ago because of pain in her legs.
Continued for hours; all the way up to a few minutes after I made her eat a
banana.

Some believe (including Buckminster Fuller) that man began in some area near
the equator where blank minds could pick up bananas because it is the only
food, easily available that has sufficient nutrients to survive.

Howie what is a PVC?

Ever have that feeling that you heart fluttered or skipped a beat? That's
what it is. Everybody has them once in a while but lots of them are not a
good sign.

I had a partial thyroidectomy when I was 18 and have taken thyroid
supplements since.  The docs assured me for the last 40 years or so
that my thyoid was in the normal range with the supplements.  All the
while, I had these "missing" heart beats (ectopic beats they're called)
off an on - sometimes I'd go months without one but they would always
return.  Finally, about 18 months ago, I had them more often than usual
and they triggered a sudden bout of atrial fibrillation which sent me
to the emergency room.  The heart beat returned to normal on its own
about an hour after onset.  I went online, discovered that thyoid
imbalance can cause this, my doc said I'm still in the normal range and
OK and to continue with the same level of medications - the same doc
who told me my PSA of 3.6 was normal and I was OK even though it had
been 2.8 two years earlier.  In his defense, I was in denial and would
have refused a biopsy at that time anyway.  Since my thyroid hormones
were at the upper range of normal I insisted on reducing my meds by
about 75%.  Since then, my thyroid levels are in the middle of the
normal range, the ectopic beats hardly ever occur, and there have been
no more bouts of fibrillation.  As has been pointed out here many
times, you've got to take charge of your own health and let the docs
advise but don't leave it entirely up to them.

Pre Ventrical Contractions

Oh, well that's good that they've gone down.  If you can get rid of
them you will have a built-in alarm for your potassium, if you get a
PVC then you'll know.
