I had my surgery on May 10. I was given sample Viagra today (100 mg. -
recommended dose 1/2 pill a day - to see if I have any side effects).
Once the trial dose if finished, I am to take half a pill everyday (I
hope I can afford it!)
I welcome comments/advise from others. Thanks.

It is a rather an early start after RP- which is probably good.
I wish I have started earlier.
Not knowing your age - don't be despair
if you find out that it takes longer that what you have hoped.

There are widespread opinions about the effectiveness of this. My sense
is that it can't hurt and hopefully it helps. My doctor prescribed 50
mg (half of a 100 mg tablet) three times per week, starting six weeks
after surgery. I think it has helped, but not as much or as fast as I
had hoped. If every day presents an affordability issue, you might try
to spread it out. I think that anything is better than nothing. If
you're going with an every day dosage, you also might want to read more
about any side effects from longterm use. As a general rule, I follow
my doctor's advice, but I always educate myself on the side so that I
make informed decisions on my own.

Thanks Buck. Fortunately, "affordability" is not an issue for me, but
long term side effect are. Do you have any recommendations to where I
can find out more about the long term effects? I can always google
them, but would appreciate a link or two if you have some. Thank you
in advance.

I think its pretty unusual to take vitamin V if you're not going to
have sex that day. The Rx for Viagra is to take it about 1 hour
before intercouse, preferably on an empty stomach.
I think joining the folowiing NG will give you a lot of insight:
alt.support. impotence

Herb,
The current line of thinking is that Vitamin V taken in small dosages on a
regular basis helps bring back one's potency. The only major study that I
know off was done by Pfizer, so some do not give it a lot of credence.
However, there is some anecdotal evidence from those in this NG that it
seems to have worked for them. As always, however, much of one's success or
lack thereof can be attributed to the six inches between the ears.

SRK - My Euro also mentioned that "studies" suggest that V taken in
small dosages on a regular basis helps bring back one's potency
"sooner", and she said it will be a shame not to even try, but did tell
me not to expect a miracle for a while.
I, of course, agreed! :-)

Hi MAP.
You've gotten great advice (as usual) from the guys.
Your post gave me an opening for MY story...
(older members may roll their eyes now :-)
My doc suggested sexual activity 1 month after surgery. (Mine was 3/05
at 56...with a 7.2 PSA)...he gave me samples of everything but liked
Cialis...only cuz it was a 36 hour drug.
He felt (and it is now a common thought) that manual stimulation and ED
drugs...would help bring fresh blood to the penis and help with
recovery.
For over a year...I took Cialis almost every other day...used a
pump...videos...manual stimulation...nd have better size...but no
spontaneous erections.
So I saw my surgeon after a year last Friday and discussed all of this.
He was pleased since my PSA's were 0 and I had better size using the
Cialis.
He looks at a 36 month time frame for nerve regeneration.
He looked at my surgery pathology which was good.
He pointed out that the nerves were nicely spared but a large number of
stitches were used....which could slow recovery.
This could slow recovery down...and we don't know how long.
I got samples and prescriptions for all of the ED drugs to try different
things...as he pointed out...some drugs work better than others for some
guys.
HE likes Cialis cuz it's a longer acting (and thus less expensive) way
to go.
So...I'll try other samples (amazingly...the first Levitra I
took...didn't give a spontaneous erection...but seemed to give a better
size).
He also feels that they start looking at patients at 18 months...to see
their progress...but he has expanded his outlook for erection recovery
to 36 months.
I really hope that this stuff HELPS you and doesn't bore you.
:-)
All the best to everyone,
Ron B.

I remind you that at 12 months I was more or less in your situation
except without the daily Cialis. After 18 months, things improved
considerably.

I need a better example of what you call a spontaneous erection. Simply
looking or thinking of something that used to arouse you before RP? If you
mean a woodie without any external stimulation, then you may have a very
long wait. I don't recall any of us here able to get it hard on it's own.
The ED drugs work great for me, and I am able to have regular sex, but
without any help..... not after 4 years.

I had commented...
"I took Cialis almost every other day...used a pump...videos...manual
stimulation...and have better size...but no spontaneous erections."
and Glassman replied...

Well, I don't think that it's totally the same as before RP...or when we
were kids...:-)
but...I seem to recall that there have been reports here of guys waking
up with
"something going on"...that they've described as a partial erection.
I guess that's what I'm thinking about when I say 'spontaneous'.
Certainly not 'rock hard'...but a little something 'on it's own.'
:-)
Best of health to all,
Ron B.
