IS A SUBSTANTIAL WEIGHT GAIN A SIDE EFFECT FROM GETTING LUPRON INJECTIONS?

Yes. That is a common side effect. Others include lethargy,
weakness, and arthritic joint pain, in addition to the ones
everybody knows about - hot flashes and loss of libido.
There's nothing surprising about what you have to do about
this - diet and exercise. The exercise will also help reduce
lethargy, weakness and joint pain.
Good luck.

It can be. On the website of the Prostate Cancer Research Institute, see
the link to Androgen Deprivation Syndrome under Side Effects/Treatment
Side Effects toward the bottom of the page at:

According to the oncologist I see, a 10% weight gains after a year of being
on Lupron is not uncommon.

By all that I have read here and experienced, yes. But, I cannot find it in
Strum, Scardino or Walsh.

It's right there in Strum (Table 1, ADT Syndrome), on several pages in
Walsh (see index, weight gain), and in most of the PC and andropause
books I just glanced in.

Still didn't find it in Strum (I think my Table 1 is different). But, it's
all over Walsh.
No excuse.

Dunno about the other authors, but Strum & Pogliano mention it. See: _A
Primer on Prostate Cancer_ subtitled "The Empowered Patient's Guide" 2nd
ed page B25. They refer to "Grade 2-3 weight gain." I'm unsure what the
grade means.

You bet. I went from 189 lbs to 264 lbs in six months. My Med Onc says very
common. He has seen 100 lbs and it is damn hard to take off.

Weight gain is a side effect of ADT. Substantial weight gain is a very
individual thing. I first started Lupron/Casodex when I was 49 and weighed
in at a fairly trim 170 pounds. Well, being younger then and able to keep
more active, I only gained about 20 pounds on the ADT. Seven years later as
I am again on ADT, and older, I now weigh in at about 200. The heaviest I
have ever been in my life. Yes, the Lupron combined with being a little
older has made it really hard to control my weight. The winter and the
holidays have really shown their toll on me!! I am really trying now that
the weather is so nice to be more active and get rid of some of the weight
gain. Your mileage will definitely vary, and your activity level and your
age can all come into play.
When a person used to have the dog neutered, they would say that he got
lazy, fat, and sat on the porch all day. Well, this is not different.
