It's been 5 weeks since RP. 3 weeks since catheter was removed. At
first I could pee pretty good, but, pee stream has been getting weaker
and weaker. Sometimes it's just big drops. Never empties the bladder.
Have to go everyhour sometimes. Intense, burning pain near the tip of
my penis. Been on Cipro 8 -10 days, no help. Any ideas? I have an appt
w/uro Thurs

Hi David,
I had similar urethral burning about 1/2" to 1" from the tip of my penis. Antibiotics
did nothing to improve the condition. The *only* thing that helped was for me to be
horizontal, which was the only position that I never leaked in. I did *a lot* of
reading in bed. Although I don't know for sure if my continuous dripping caused the
irritation, but the burning didn't stop until my incontinence improved to the point
where I was no longer continuously dripping. This took me until 12 weeks post op. On
the few days that I still drip, the burning seems to return. However, I'd talk to
your uro about your symptoms, especially about the weakening stream and the urine
retention.
HTH,
KenA

Oh, the other thing I noticed was that the burning was greater on the days that I
took a normal Multi-Vitamin tablet. Maybe my urine composition changed due to these
vitamins and increased the irritation. I continued to take 1,000mg of vitamin C
separately and noticed no increase in the burning with only Vitamin C.

My uro was concerned at first with formation of scar tissue that would block
the urethra. I guess that's fairly common. A friend waited until he was
totally blocked and then had to go to the ER to be catherized. I'm sure
your uro will look into all this.

You could have a blockage. Don't wait until Thursday. I had to go to the
ER in excruciating pain in the middle of the night to have a cathater
reinserted. Call the Urologist immediately.

Dave, I don't know if this applies at all. Steve's good stream reduced
over a period of days (from Wednesday when the cath came out) until
that Monday night he could not pee *at all*. Lots of urgency, poorer
and poorer results. Well, *in his case* the cure turned out to be
ibuprophen. The PA had told us when the cath came out to take 3-4
ibuprophen 3 x day, but Steve quit that as soon as possible. That
night he took a vicoden, had a drink, started taking the ibuprophen,
and it relaxed and started working. He feels it was
irritation/inflammation. He is not taking ibuprophen all the time but
can feel it when it starts to have that burning, irritated feeling and
takes ibuprophen then. I looked up ibuprophen, you have to take at
least 1200-1300 mg a day to have an antiinflammatory affect.
PS the uro was going to do a scan to see if the bladder emptied but
this was 2 days after he restarted the ibuprophen and he didn't need
it. But bladder not emptying can be a real dangerous health situation.
PPS If you have to get another catheter, ask your uro if he'll put it
in. You don't want some trainee nurse in the ER doing it.

Sounds like you have urine retention, which is simply another way of
saying that you can't empty your bladder (which you already know).
This happens sometimes due to swelling of tissues down there and
squeezing off the urethra, creating an obstruction. I would get to
your urologist. S/he might recommend self-catheterizing with a straight
cath (something I have been doing for over ten months now, several
times a day). It isn't fun but not as bad as it might seem. Act on
this right away. Not being ablwe to empty your bladder can become
serious over time.
I have all the same symptoms: intense pain, urine is only drops, etc
But I am in the unlucky 1% --- you will get better in good time I am
sure.

Several weeks ago I told the urologist that my stream had
been slowing down over about a year.
So, in hospital, he inserted a scope and discovered that
there was residue left over from radiation 15 years ago
which caused a blockage.
So I had a prostatectomy performed by laser to remove what
was left of the prostate.
Had a catheter for about 2 weeks after that.
After the catheter was removed the stream started to slow
down again until it measured no more than 2 centimetres.
Back to the urologist who inserted a curved device which he
used to break apart a couple of areas that had sealed
together, like glue. (Can you feel it?)
Turns out that after the removal of a catheter, parts of the
urethra can sort of glue together causing a small stream.
Had to inject 2% Xylocaine for several days after that to
keep things working.
Stopped the Xylocaine yesterday and all is well so far.
Hope this makes sense.
Warren,
peace

Warren it made sense. And may apply some what to me. I started taking
ibuprofen last night, as suggested by Laurel. It has stopped the pain
and the "drops". stream is still weak, but my bladder does empty now,
takes about 2 minutes. But mi slept all night without having to et up
at all, and no urgency today. So hopefully it's just inflamation and
the ibuprofen is making it go down.
Thanks for you input Warren, I still have a ways to go with this
disease. Need to know all I can.

Cipro is only helpful for an infection, which may not be at all
involved in your case.

I did not have a problem urinating after the RRP, but I kept reading here
about guys "peeing like a race horse". I did not have what I thought was a
strong stream. The uro did a cysto and found that the opening where the
urethra was reattached to the bladder was about a third the diameter that it
should be. So, after the bladder neck resection I now do have a strong
stream. The procedure was no big deal and I did not have to wear a
catheter, so don't worry if that turns out to be what is happening to you.
Good luck. I hope it is just something temporary that they can fix easily.
