My name is David, in Melbourne Australia.
In August 05 routine tests discovered a PSA of 9,
which rose to 19 after 2 months. Ultrasound & DRE
were negative, biopsy found cancer. Gleason 3/4 or 4/3.

I had a radical prostatectomy on March 8th. Staples
removed after 1 week, catheter after 2 weeks. The
surgeon said the op went smoothly, with all the cancer
appearing to have been removed.

Blood test last Wednesday, result as yet unknown.

What can be done to encourage functionality to return?
Or is it just a case of waiting and hoping?
Is there info on this that I can access?

Incontenence or impotence?  Or both?  Most of us have both right after
surgery.

Incontinence is best handled with kegel exercises.  There are two schools of
thought on these.  You can either stop and start your stream while urinating
(my uro hates this one) or exercise your pelvic floor.  I do not have a good
description for this, but you can find it many places on the Internet.

Impotence is best handled through continuous stimulation and moderate use of
small doses of Viagra or other such meds.  Or, at least that seems to be the
newest thing.  Take a quart Viagra each night and stimulate the penis at
other times and, before long, you start getting erections.

In my case, this technique was not known at the time.  I tried Viagra and it
didn't work.  I tried shots and it worked well once and not so well other
times.  I tried the pump with varying success.  Then, one day, 2½ years
after my prostate surgery, he came out to play all on his own. --- go
figure.

The moral of the story is just play with it a lot and eventually, he'll come
out to see the light.

A quart of Viagra...I'd be as tall as the Empire State Building. ;)

Neither I or my wife see a problem with this... *vbg*
You could be a human 'Washington Monument' (For our international members (pun

YEOWWW!!!

I meant "quarter of a" Viagra.  If you take a quart, your penis will
explode.

Both problems exist.
Been doing all that with great enthusiasm :)

I feel I'd rather avoid viagra unless it
definitely will assist, without undesirable
side effects. What are the facts, and are
they definite or just a current view?

Re erections. If a partial erection is achieved,
is that necessarily a good sign, or can manual stimulation without a functioning
nerve do that too?

Do erections usually return gradually or in
one fell swoop?

Hope I'm making sense!

I would be interested too in finding out if erections return gradually or at
one fell swoop: My RP took place on january 19 and no sign of spontaneous
erections.

For me it was very gradual, so much so that it's not really noticeable
over a short period of time. I'd say that the improvement curve was as long
as 3 years for me. It's still much better with a small bite of a vitamin V.
The OP should also know that a limp and dry orgasm is not only possible, but
really great. Play as often as you can. Wife/girlfriend optional.

You continue to give me hope, Steve.  Though "manipulatiion" and "dry
humping" are better than nothing - "he" would still much rather to stand up
and be counted.  However, after 16 months post op "he" doesn't seem much
interested in joining "us"... Just about the time I start getting "down" on
the fact he's still in semi-retirement - I remember your 2 1/2 years of
"limp"tatude... Nice to see you still helping folks out on this ng...
Thanks...

PS  Viagra and shots are just too expensive for me..  Maybe I'll treat
myself to a shot for Christmas next year...  "Hey, honey, look what ol' St
Nick left us under the tree!!!"  (lol)

04/06: Good bladder control - no erections (yet)

Yeah, it is a shame that having sex costs as much as a hooker.
