I was wondering if the experience of those post-RP (I'm thinking here
of the phase well after post-operative pain and healing) find that
difficulties in engaging in normal sex are assuaged to some extent by
a loss of appetite for it?  (Notwithstanding the potential for one's
partner's frustration of course.)

Grateful for any insight.

Post RP (without nerves spared) I didn't have any of the "urges" altho
my RE surgeon said I would get "eroused" (haven't yet at 33 mos). I
like this scenario, it feels comfortable not getting the "urges" that I
know is incidental to having a prostate. I've been there, done that,
and in my 56th year I have other things I'd rather do in life (than
sex).

Most definitely. I can enjoy it once initiated, but very seldom feel any
urge to start things ... a significant change from pre-op status.

You sound more like my wife! ;)
(I think without a prostate you can get "headaches" more often). Just
being a bit facetious. I could not resist.

'rosbif' asks a very common question.

After RP...some guys...depending upon their stage of life...and their
relationship, have a number of reactions.

Younger guys...for whom sex is a very important part of their
relationship...sometimes feel 'like a failure' with their SO.

THIS can make them feel bad and cut into their desire.

I had the RRP at 57 almost a year ago.

I was glad to be alive, and was surprised and grateful to be able to
have orgasms...even WITHOUT erections.

I take Cialis almost every other day, use a pump, watch videos etc. to
increase the blood flow and hope for the best.

Those on hormone therapy will have a decreased libido but just the shock
of having your nerves pulled and prodded (even though spared) can get a
guy 'out of the mood.'

Things will hopefully improve over time...so everyone should try to hang
in there.

The very best to all,

Ron B.

I am glad to know that you can have orgasm without erections: can you tell
me how do you manage it? Am I missing something?

The same way you achieved them in your early teens.

Hey I.P., did you mean cumming in your pants when a 17 year old
cheerleader walked by?

:-)

(My apologies to the ladies here)

Hey, if that still works for you ...

Had my RLRP 12/27/05. I'd say my desire has slightly increased since then, but am
still impotent. But like Ron B, I do have orgasms without erections. Still waiting
for Willie to wake up, even with both nerves spared.

I had HT + radiation rather than surgery.  The Lupron produced
an almost total loss of libido.  I found it disturbing that I could
look at my wife and, while I still felt all the same physical affection,
I did not feel the same biological urges.

I forced myself to have sex during that period and, to my
surprise, was successful and enjoyed it.  After the Lupron
wore off I worked hard to recover capability.  It was a part
of my life that I wasn't (and am still not) ready to part with.

My capacity today is nothing like what it was 40 years ago,
or even 20 years ago, but I'll fight hard to keep whatever
I've got left.  I know that as we get old we lose lots of
capabilities, but I try hard to retain as much as I can of
every one of them, whether it be sex, athletics, intellectual
pursuits, or whatever.  When it comes time to die I'll try to
face that bravely and with equanimity, but I don't plan to
give up anything along the way that I'm not actually forced
to.

Well, that's my plan anyway.

It is been 21 months since my nerve-sparing RRP. With the help of
Levitra, I have been on a schedule of sex once a week with my wife with
no ED problems. I turned 68 this month.

Encouraging words to say the least...thanks.

Many thanks to everyone for throwing some light on this.
As an average and intermittent enthusiast of sex I was a bit concerned
that a tension between supply, demand and delivery systems might lead
to an overbearing yearning but I'm reassured by the feedback - if the
appetite matches the portions then all well and good.  Having never
been Tarzan to anyone's Jane, I'd hope the issue of reduced maleness
would be manageable and, as has already been said, there's always
plenty to do in the potting shed...

I wonder if anyone has ever done any studies on the ability to type post HT.
In high school I went to typing class daily and typed 50-60 words a minute
without a mistake.  And that's all the typing I did.  Now, I seem to type
3-4 hours a day and can't even type "knew".

Post RP and prior to HT, I found no loss of appetite for sex.  I found only
a significantly reduced ability.

I tried to send you an e-mail but your addy didn't work.

If you want to send me an addy that I could send to...I'd be happy to
send the detailed message.

All the best,
