Just hoping someone could give me some advice please.  My husband  (62)
had his prostate removed in September 05, recovered well and then
experienced some bladder problems.  Had a BNI in December . catheter in
overnight and then removed next day . Experienced a loss of lots of
blood clots about a week later.  All well for a few weeks but then the
urine flow started to diminish again.  Repeat BNI on Friday and
catheter removed this morning.   Within a few hours could not pass any
urine and very uncomfortable, catheter re inserted and there seem to be
a fair amount of blood clots, which now seemed to have passed through
and the urine is blood stained but lighter and he is drinking lots to
flush through.  They are going to monitor him in hospital until Monday.
My question is has anyone else experienced this and why does this
happen - is it all down to scarring where the bladder was re connected
after rp.  He was just gaining some control too...will this set him
back?  We are off on a very long overseas trip at the end of March for
7 weeks.  Any help or advice would be appreciated

Thank you

I'm afraid that I don't know anything about the medical situation
of your husband, but I have a question you can pose to his doctor.

A number of men here have reported that they have been able to
catheterize themselves using a kit designed especially for this
purpose.  Perhaps the medical people can provide such a kit and
teach your husband how to use it.  If the problem recurs during your
trip, having that capability might turn what could otherwise be a nasty
crisis into something much less terrible.  Some men have said it's
very simple and painless and has gotten them through bad times
with no problems.

Best of luck.

Are you talking about bladder neck resection procedure to open up the
bladder neck? If so, the blod clots could be from taking aspirin, which
inhibits the ability of wounds (from the procedure) to heal properly.
Don't take aspirin before or after a procedure, to allow the wound to
heal normally. (I am not a doctor.)

==========
hi NB...  i was one of those unlucky ones that had excessive scarring at
the bladder neck.  i had my RP due in april 2003.  in july, they first
tried to stretch the scar tissue.  it didn't work.  in sept of that
year. they did the cut downs into the scar tissue and did some other
surgery work of cutting lesions that had grown inside my bladder from
the surgery.

i wore the catheter for 5 days after surgery.  it was bright red blood
when i came out of surgery but cleared up by nightfall.

the good news is that it cured all the problems in that area and gave me
back my life.

he should do well and it did not alter my
bladder control at all.

the both of you should enjoy your cruise very well.....

Thank you to all all  for your responses , he is out of hospital now
and for the next three weeks will do self catheterisation once a day to
help keep open.  Seems the problem now  might be occuring with the 1st
sphincter (apparently there are 2) and we hope that with this that it
will stay open and we can try and get back to near as normal as
possible...Scary time for all but we are getting there and at least
there is no cancer.  I wish you all well

NB, only one sphincter left after RRP; two before.  The one between the
prostate and bladder was removed during surgery.
