E. Hendrix - 14 Jan 2006 19:53 GMT Next week I'll undergo surgery, and I want to thank all of you who allowed me to lurk and learn. I started with messages from 2002, and became current. As I approached 2006 many of you gave me information I would not have thought to ask. I'll keep you updated on my progress. This NG has been a life line for me. Thanks

Hendrix KenA - 14 Jan 2006 22:57 GMT Hi E. Hendrix! Had my RLRP on 12/27/05. Although I'm a little younger, your stats are a little better than mine were. Just as others helped me, I'd be more than willing to answer any questions RE: my experiences. Let me know. KenA =====

John Loomis - 15 Jan 2006 01:39 GMT Hello Mr Hendrix, One nurse told me to sit back, relax, and pretend you are going on a cruise ride, where everyone will help you, you will get fed, bathed, catered too, pampered, and all the above. Yes, I know it sounds too good, and yes a bit of that does happen. So sit back and relax, enjoy the most latest scientific advantages we have ever seen. You will be fine, and I have to remind you...... Make sure you look in the rear view mirror as you leave the Hospital. I want you to see the sign getting smaller, and not larger.... John Loomis RP 1999 @ 49 still kickin.

BATHED?! You mean civilian hospitals BATHE post-op pts? The most I was offered was a hot, wet towel for my brow -- in an overheated ward. MAN, I got ripe and crusty over the next seven days. I guess that saved the VA a few cents in soap and laundry. My "cruise ride" was on a tramp steamer ... as a stowaway. '-)
OTOH, it didn't cost me one cent ... and the morphine must have blocked my sense of smell.

Finest bather of all time and was extremely gentle and thorough around the package.

John Loomis - 16 Jan 2006 03:07 GMT Hello IP..... I paid the premium....Blue Cross. Yes I got bathed, and yes it was no picnic either. I had middle nite patients coming in with appendix... etc. Anyway, that is long past, and it was very hot in the Hospital. I was shown how to bathe myself, and was never a crusty person. We were to use plastic wrap, and tape over the incision, and get in the shower....It worked, I was extremely happy and that I could do that. Yes I got light brothe, soup, ice, then little by little dinner..... Turkey Pot Pie...it was very good. Remember I was born on an Army Hospital. My Dad was a lifer. I was born at Ft. Lewis Washington...Army Hospital Anyway, sorry the VA treated you that way...... I saw my Dad treated very similiar..and my Mom.

Freely - 16 Jan 2006 07:29 GMT > I was shown how to bathe myself, and was never a crusty person. We were > to use plastic wrap, and tape over the incision, and get in the shower I was told to just hop in the shower, too, with no need to cover the incisions. Two problems: 1. It took me three days of trying to find a nurse willing to take the time to help me out of bed and onto my feet. 2. Then when I inquired about getting a shower, a nurse informed me the shower was so cold that almost none of the pts would use it. She was right.
So they just had to put up with the way I came out of surgery for 7 days --- which explains the crustiness I was referring to: an RRP leaves a messy field. Fortunately, I didn't get any infections, so it wasn't my problem. One surgeon finally took a swipe at my incision with a damp pad ... probably because he couldn't see it clearly. Yes, the whole university surgical staff knew and complained about the nursing situation; they had little control over it. They said my two-page story could add nothing to the litany of problems they had already filed.
Heads up, guys going into VA hospitals; make sure a close friend watches over you in those places. They're overworked and over-regimented. Had this one not also been a cancer center and major university teaching hospital I wouldn't have gone near the place.

wayah@bellsouth.net - 15 Jan 2006 07:20 GMT You go boy... Me... PSA 1.7 3+3 9/05 RRP 10/05/05 Final Path 3+3 T2A Neg. Margins. Doing very well.
You'll do just great!
All the best.

jhhtexas@ieee.org - 16 Jan 2006 17:01 GMT I was lucky. My doctor got me out of the hospital and sent me home one night after RRP. He said I could recover much better at home. My wife drove me and helped me back to my bed. I could sleep through the night, get better food on my schedule, and had a full-time assistant to get me through the two weeks with a catheter.
Steve U - 15 Jan 2006 13:51 GMT E.Hendrix, You are in my prayers for good results. I was in your shoes about two years ago. Everything turned out well. The worst part of the ordeal was waiting for the surgery. Steve U
Pops - 16 Jan 2006 16:52 GMT Your numbers are great! You'll be fine!
I planned four weeks off of work after LRP... could have gone back in two (assuming I waited for cath to come out). As it was I took a vacation to Florida (on the state disability dole) the fourth week. Might as well make some lemonade out of that PCa lemon!
Take a a break! Ride the waves!
