Does anyone have any experience with kegel excercizes? We have found
conflicting suggestions on how many times a day, for how long etc..
It is 3 months since surgery and haven't seen much results with the
excersizes.

Thank you
Bohan

Good. Then the test worked. I've been fighting a newsgroup posting problem
for over a year. One Dell tech may have solved the problem with one
keystroke after some 30 techs failed in probably 80 hours on the phone with
them including two HD reformats.

Oh, geeeeez ... I hope my beach bum buds don't see that. For years I've put
extra padding on everything from my body and bikes (dirt bike racing) to my
windsurfing gear (it's fragile). They say my solution to EVERYTHING is to
"Put a pad in it."

What was that posting problem?  Or rather, the solution?

Hello Bohan,
Do you walk?  That helps, if so, prior to my surgery I practiced
stopping and starting  anytime I had to go or thought about it.
After surgery, when the cath was out, I brought a big diaper, and needless
to say, I was somewhat dry, and only lost a few drops here and there.....
I have to tell you, I am dry now and was for 6 years....
I did lose nerves also......
I would keep trying, stopping the stream, and starting it, drinks lots of
fluids.....You will be surprised how the body recovers.
I do wish you the best and sorry for your problems...

It's like LaMaze classes. It gives you something to do when you're
feeling like you aren't doing anything to help yourself. Just stop and start
your stream, and eventually you'll get control again.

Kegels can help I suppose with stress incontinence - helping to hold it
in with a sneeze, cough, etc..  As for the routine leaking such as when
you walk, stand, etc., I don't think the Kegels are worth a damn.  If
you can stop and start the stream you are flexing the correct muscle
but what you really want is that muscle to work on its own without you
having to squeeze it 24/7 which is something you can't do anyway.  Most
likely, the muscle and the nerves feeding it suffered some trauma
during surgery and it will take time for everything to heal if they
ever do completely.  I'm still leaking well over two years out and if I
had a nickel for every Kegel ...  Well, you get the idea.

Ditto. I'm preparing a letter about that to bounce off several incontinence
researchers.

bohan,
This is the Kegel Exercise Routine I used after surgery.
The key to doing Kegels right is to properly identify the pelvic
muscles that will help improve your continence. How to do that?
1.    First, you need to be able to stop or at least slow down urinary
flow while urinating
2.    Sit on the toilet and interrupt flow, stopping and starting the
stream a few times
3.    Avoid squeezing your anal muscles. Identify the muscles that stop
and start flow
4.    With an empty bladder start contracting and holding the contraction
of the identified muscles for about three to five seconds. Then relax
the muscles for a second or two.
5.    Once you are confident of exercising the correct muscles, start an
exercise program that will increase the strength of those muscles.
Avoid over exercising. This can hurt your progress.
6.    Start with a set of 5 long contractions (3 to 5 seconds) and 5 short
contractions (one second). Do this twice a day to start
7.    Build your "stamina" by increasing the number of cycles slowly.
Again do not hurt the muscles by overdoing too much. Get to do 10 long
contractions and 10 short contractions three times a day without
getting tired.
8.    Once you master the routine. Alternate short and long contractions.
9.    Be patient. It takes time to regain continence.

Hope it works for you...and you do not need a Mac or a PC
