hi folks - any body else have this problem.
before surgery, i had BPH and the problems it caused. one of them was
making frequent trips to the bathroom.
after surgery, i had excessive scarring and complications from the RP.
in a nutshell, it left me going to bathroom 16 times in a 90 minute span
- 24/7 - for a period of about 6 months.
the good news - the last surgery cut the lesions loose in the bladder
and bladder neck. they did a hydrostretch of the bladder at that time.
now - 2 1/2 years have past since the RP.
but i still get these urges that i need to go 10 - 15 minutes after i
just went and i have very little in the bladder. the feeling is can
best be described as having a really full bladder and trying to hold it.
they come on fairly sudden too, like you didn't know you had to go until
you stood up type feeling.
in november, i was dx'ed with multiple hydrocels and cysts. the rad.
ask me if i had UTI's. not to my knowledge, yet, the ultra-sound was
showing debris in the hydrocels from UTI's indicating past UTI
infections.
so, i had a urine analysis ran for infection because i thought that
these sudden urges would be related to the UTI's. but the analysis came
back clean. yet, i still get the urges to go.
then, it dawned on me that they might be bladder spasms.
i find them most annoying when i go to bed, you lay down and 10 minutes
later, feel like i need to get up again. but i can tough it out, the
urges go away and i can sleep most of the time without getting up.
now, these spasms don't happen all the time. i might get 3 or 4 times
in one day - the urges that i've described. other days, i don't have
any and can go quite a while between bathroom breaks.
am i by myself on this one? i'm not heard anyone bring this topic up so
late after surgery.
i'm going to follow up with my urology clinic.

I have what you describe typically once per day, usually about a half
hour after my first emptying in the morning. When I go because of this
urge, I dump a fair amount of urine into the bowl but not as much as
other times when I have no urge to go. I had something similar for a
few years pre-op and was told it was due to the bladder muscles being
stretched during the evening as the bladder filled during those eight
hours and that they were unable to completely empty the bladder on the
first urination in the morning. Maybe the same thing is happening now,
maybe the doc who told me this was full of it. Anyway, that's my
experience.

I had RP and then salvage radiation and have experienced bladder spasms ever
since. I also had a stricture, which surgery corrected. The bladder does
not like to expand, and what I eat and drink does have a big effect on the
spasms, caffeine being one huge no-no. On average I will need to void every
two waking hours, but very frequently get another urge just 10-15 minutes
after voiding. And again, and again. I pretty much fight the urges until I
feel that I really do have enough in the bladder to justify a trip to the
can. During the night, 1-3 trips to the bathroom are the norm. I have been
on one medication designed to reduce bladder spasms for about 4 months now
with minor success and my urologist just put me on a stronger one last week.
It seems that there are many stages of medication that they can try. I have
only been on this new one just a short time and there has been considerable
improvement already. Time will tell. I have had the benefit of an AMS 800
artificial sphincter for about 10 months now and it has not had any effect
on the spasms, nor should it I guess, but it does help reduce the leakage
that the spasms sometimes produce. It sounds like medication should take
care of this urge thing, the spasms.
I have read, enjoyed, and benefited from your posts for a long time now. I
hope that my experiences and reply can be of benefit to you for a change.
Best of luck to you with getting rid of this major inconvience.
