Christmas greetings to all.
My husband (64) was diagnoses with Prostate Cancer last July with PSA
5.2. After much research, of which this NG was the primary source, he
had surgery at Stanford University Hospital with Dr. James Brooks.
Thank you John Loomis and Peter Headland.
RP Surgery on 12/15/05, released on Saturday 12/17 and out shopping for
Christmas on 12/22! Post op biopsy report indicated cancer contained
in 10% of prostate, Gleason 3 +3 = 6, margins and lymph nodes clear,
and both nerves spared.
The NG postings have been (and will continue to be) a great source of
information and support to us and others who will unfortunately become
new members of this club. We have laughed with you and cried with you
and had moments of "AHHH" as murky or new questions/dilemmas
become clear. Thank you.
Some quick notes about our experience: once my husband had decided on
surgery, through this NG we learned what to look for in a surgeon and
this ultimately led us to Dr. Brooks, with whom we are extremely
pleased.
Stanford University Hospital and staff: we requested a private room.
Although it was offered for me to stay with my husband in the room,
after surmising that he was alert, comfortable and well attended, I
choose to return to the motel room as I had not had any sleep the
previous two nights. Recommend private room. Nursing staff seemed a bit
short staffed...although quickly available, seemed to be rushing...
Shopping list: wonderful - we were well prepared. Even bought a
recliner in which he sleeps at night and rests during the day. (For 40
years I had refused to have a recliner in the house, saw it on the
shopping list and began an immediate search for just the right one:
thank you craigslist.) Thank you to the keeper and the contributors to
the shopping list.
Most uncomfortable episode: within minutes of returning home, husband
complained of constipation and gas. Very very uncomfortable. Called on
the hospital oncall Urologist who recommended Phillips Milk of Magnesia
and stool softners. Husband wanted more immediate relief...this is
where you used to call your ol' granny for a home remedy...ahhh, turn
on computer go to the PCa NG...quick key word search and viola! Prune
juice and prunes...of course! Also info that anesthetic plus the pain
killers = constipation. Problem solved.
Tonight we are going out to Christmas Eve dinner and plan to spend a
quiet Christmas day with walks and Christmas TV. Resting up for the
next challenge(s).
Many thanks to you all.
Wishing everyone (lurkers and posters) a very happy Christmas and the
very best in the New Year!

So pleased to hear all went well at Stanford and with Dr. Brooks. I
interviewed Dr. Brooks and was much impressed with him and the Stanford
staff and facility. I had my laparoscopic surgery elsewhere but I
always recommend Dr. Brooks to anyone in the area. Congratulations
again and, hard to believe now, this whole event will soon be a distant
memory for the two of you. You have much to toast during the holidays.

Even with the "advantage" of having a bowel surgeon on my OR and recovery
teams, I faced the same issues and ignorance. My bowel guy wanted me on
low-residue (i.e., low fiber) foods and irritant-type laxatives to speed up
the process (I didn't get to leave the hospital without leaving calling card
#2). I argued that low-fiber foods constipate me and chemical laxatives
(e.g., sienna) double me over in painful cramps. After several days, he gave
in and let me choose my preferred poison.
I was amazed that I had to request the pharmacy to send up prune juice for
our ward patients' refrigerator , which was well-stocked with other juices
for us. I quickly drank all the prune juice they sent and ordered more. I
also skipped much of the fiber-free food and added a little metamucil and
more fluids to my diet ... don't want to overdo it until the drain pipes are
unstopped. And I kept up the stool softener.
Soon the doc got his calling card, I was sent home, and I haven't had THAT
problem again.

Hello,
Dr. Brooks was my surgeon in Nov. 1999
I was 49. I am glad you had a good experience.
I threw out all the stool stuff, quick taking meds, ate prunes, drank lots
of water, walked.....and walked, and walked.
Now I run.
The recliner was the best.
When the catheter came out, I was with diapers, and I did not drip a bit,
but sometimes...That went away.
I had 1 nerve spared, and that took 2 years to get control of the 11th
finger. (LOL)
Dr. Brooks gave me injection meds, I bought a pump, viagra did not work.
Now I am 100 % all works, and with nudge from viagra.
Merry Christmas.
Tell Dr. Brooks I say Hi!
I do contribute to his cancer research program.
I would do that, if you can afford it.

It is always nice to hear that the shopping list is helpful. I will keep
posting it for those that follow. Merry Christmas!

Welcome, Mrs. Conway.
My surgery was exactly 5 years before your husband's. Though I had a slight
problem that kept me in the hospital eight days, I was out in time for
Christmas. It was the best Christmas of my life!
Here's wishing you, your husband and your family the Very Merriest of
Christmases.

Merry Christmas to you and your family Mrs. Conway.
Thanks for the wonderful post.
Indeed, Joe's list is a tremendous resource to all of us...and will be
to others in the future.
Happy Holidays,

Best wishes for a speedy recovery. You are both done with the hardest
part:the waiting.
