As a "newbie" that is looking for prostate information from people who are
going through, or have been through the many aspects of PC, I really thought
this newsgroup would be a "God Send", instead, in reading posts for the last
several days, I have found a small group of men that are very well educated
in PC,,using this group for their personal "chat line" to argue of all
things,"Religion", and other non PC subjects.
Carry on Gentleman.

I sincerely doubt it.  I joined on your recommendation in an earlier
thread, but have found it of, at best, peripheral interest and far less
relevant to my concerns than this group has been.  Different strokes for
different folks, perhaps, but what Robert Caron wanted sounds very much
like what this group has given me over the last year and a half.  (Not
clicking on the subject lines of the OT stuff is a skill one acquires
readily.)

Yeah, but when's the last time you drove past a car wreck without looking,
failed to test a Wet Paint sign, or examined your diaper to decide when to
change it? How ELSE are we to decide whom to vote for than reading biased,
anecdotal, unsupported political crap on a gardening or football forum? Lord
KNOWS we don't want to subject ourselves to the abuse on a POLITICAL forum.

What you want is surely and easily available here sir. A couple of OT
threads do not in the least diminish our ability and desire to help. Ask
away.  With so much potential doom and gloom 24/7 we're entitled to a break
once in awhile don't cha think? ; )

Give us a second chance, Robert.  Apart from an occasional flight of fancy
there really is much good information here and very frank discussions.
Subject lines are usually helpful but, like other newsgroups, we often go
off chasing rabbit trails.

It's not common, Robert. Don't worry about it, and appreciate the fact that
our common bond far overrides our uncommon differences. We've seen far more
raucus discussions of legitimate PC issues than of OT stuff, and unlike
shallower forums, I have yet to notice anyone's OT opinions taint their PC
opinions or others' acceptance thereof.

I should add that you may have missed the argument that religion and even
politics affect PC treatment in several ways, including access to medical
care in different countries and under different administrations, tradeoffs
between QOL and life extension, euthanasia, less contradictory legal issues
such as power of attorney and living wills, and drug approval and access.
Once the topic is brought up, it strays sometimes. I have yet to see OT
discussions get out of hand in the year I've been here, unlike most forums
where"gunfire" often erupts within two Send/Receive cycles.

I was one of the first to respond to Stavros' post enadeavouring to
steer him away to a more appropriate news group plus positively
stating I didn't drag my knuckles on the ground [evolution vs
creation]

It was the "Ugly Americans" who swiftly converted the thread to
Religion.

Anyway, none of them ever pay attention to me as I'm a crocodile
dancer from down under, and therefore inferior to members of the
greatest screwed up Nation in the World LOL.

Please let me assure you that what you are looking for is certainly here on
this ng, as it has been for me. I myself was so bewildered and ignorant
about PCa when I came here after my diagnosis and learned what I needed to
know from knowledgeable and caring people, whom I all respect, each and
every one.  And wise and good advice.   It's a privilege to be here and, as
you state, a God-send." .  .

hi robert - if you notice the title of this newsgroup. it does say
"support".

for you to come along and blast away with your judgement about our off
topics is your business.  everyone is entitled to their opinion.

but i will point out that if you do a google search about all the past
posts, you will find that there is a lot of GREAT support here.

and in my opinion - support covers the ENTIRE individual.   that
includes computer problems to religion to anything else that affects how
they feel.

prostate cancer has changed our lives so much that things in the past
that didn't bother us then - do now.

for me - i don't handle stress as well.  so, if i were to comment about
something off topic because it bothers me, am i out of line.

by your definition - i would be.

just giving you some points to ponder, robert.

reflect back on the overall purpose of this newsgroup and then draw your
own conclusions.

best wishes.....

Robert,

This NG is a God-send!  Don't leave because of a few.  Instead, when you see
a thread going astray, just delete the rest of the thread.  It's been my
experience that nothing valuable is mentioned after these men forget they
are in an prostate cancer group.

This is a GREAT group of folks.

I dropped Robert a line telling him as much.

I respect EVERYONE here and when Steve K. writes:

"It's been my experience that nothing valuable is mentioned after these
men forget they are in an prostate cancer group."

I feel (and I don't for a SECOND question his comments) that if the guys
put aside the PCa for just a MOMENT...it may make them feel more human
and like the 'other guys' who DON'T have PCa.

They 'shoot the breeze' like anyone else...but if faced with a serious
question...these same folks would jump to attention with the most
factually correct and thoughtful answers that anyone could ever want.

It's not 'comic relief'...but if all of the scary things were dwelled
upon as often as some of us dwell upon them...(ME, for example)...the
anxiety level would be off the charts.

It doesn't bother me a bit WHERE the discussion goes.

Great health to all,

Ron B.

When I mentioned the fact that regardless of where the thread was going
at the time...the great folks here would immediately rally to help
newbies or anyone else with a question or concern...

I.P. commented:

"Ron B" dreamed on:

'these same folks would jump to attention'

Hey, it sounded better than...

'these same folks would rise, with varying degrees of success, some
using ED drugs, some not."

THAT line just didn't have the same caché.

:-)

Good health to all,

Ron B.

I was too brief in my comments.

I enjoy the discussions about Hondas, computers, jokes, personal lives, dogs
tripping owners.  But, I have noticed that when discussions about anything
deteriorate into arguments, name-calling, and virulent diatribe, they never,
ever come back to "discussion."  At one time, I watched with fascination as
they deteriorated, often participating myself.

But, now, I just delete.  First and foremost, I'm here to help people with
Prostate Cancer and to get help myself.  It is still a great group of people
for that.  So long as we all stay on that topic, we generally get along
great.

And, newbies need to know that.
